Anyone on here own a Ford Territory????

HI there! Looking at buying a 4wd to tow my new 5.3m ali boat. Have been looking at some Ford Territorys. There a 6 cyl  4 litre so im thinking they would have enough grunt to tow a boat. If anyone knows anything about them, let me know..cheers Wade

are you paying for the fuel?

Wed, 2009-04-08 15:56

If you are, give them a miss. Very thirsty. If it's a company bus then who cares!

But they are AWD, not 4WD, so don't expect too much in way of off-road capabilities. $45k is a lot to spend on a pretend 4WD IMO......

For $50k you can get a base model 5 door Pajero that is a real 4WD, have way better fuel economy and tow your boat about 1000 x easier. The 3 doors are even cheaper. I'd personally have that over a Territory any day of the week.

Or you could even go for a Ranger/Colorado/Hilux/Triton/BT50/Navara with dual cab and a tray if you dont "need" a conventional "4WD" wagon.

marketed for the american market. the first few gens shipped to Australia failed markedly.

as huggy says there an AWD and softroader....

dont waste your $$; go for a diesel, we have a pajero and very economical and robust car. can look at prado but more expensive than a pajero. hilux unbreakable and triton is a good car.

leave american stuff alone

Teritory is built in Australia for the Australian market. It is not exported. It has been the #1 seller in its catagory since it was released untill this year. I think you are getting confused with the explorer.

They are, apart from the territory having really lousy fuel economy.  Too many people complain about 15l/100km in city circuit for it to be just a myth.

Buy a turbo diesel!

I thought the first gen Territory was built in the US

could be mistaken though but i do remenber that they upgraded the chassis/susspension on the subsequent models(s)

either way both are softroaders and there are better options (IMO)

nothing personal

its all australian in design and manufacture (well some of the parts). But it was and always has been put together here.

Ford was a customer of mine in a previous job, I know it pretty well back to front, as I spent a lot of time with Ford trying to improve their output and casting quality. But because it cost a measly 4c per block more (but only required 5 minutes machining compared to 35 minutes usually) it was rejected. The things I could tell you about that I6 4L - suffice to say I wouldn't buy one. They couldn't organise a piss up in a brewery, hence why they are struggling now and will eventually shut.

The Tezza was referred to as the "bullfrog" around the factory for obvious reasons.

as Damo said

and I must have deleted from my reply Embarassed turbo diesel, turbo diesel, turbo diesel!!

And when towing, the economy of a t/d versus a petrol is like chalk and cheese. The t/d is a lot less affected, the petrols get very thirsty as they have to be reved a lot harder. But the diesel has the high torque at low revs to overcome that deficincy of needing to rev the ring out of it.

Thu, 2009-04-09 12:33

Wade,

A bloke I work with has one and as the blokes have said above the thing is horrendous on the juice. He will get rid of his as soon as his lease is up.

I have a 5.3 Razerline which I tow with a turbo diesel Kia Sorrento, the car does the job really well and is light on the diesel consumption. Might be something to look at, I did a lot of loking at the mid sized AWD/4WD markey and came up with the Sorrento.

Cheers Steve

Pretty sure either Ian, Colin & Dreamweaver all had ok things to say about the Kia Sportage or Sorento. I think Ian mentioned this product review once also.

Hmm still think you're nuts

Thu, 2009-04-09 16:40

Hmm still think you're nuts buying petrol. We flog my brothers 4wd 3l? diesel bt50 and it still uses less diesel than the 2l petrol 2wd  it replaced. I was shocked to see better fuel economy in the bigger motor on a heavier car.

I think you would be fine

Fri, 2009-04-10 10:49

I think you would be fine with your boat, being ali, shouldn't be too heavy. We only tow a little ali 4.2 cc and you don't even know its there on the bt50.

Doubtless someone on here knows more than I do about how they tow?

I have a turbo diesel sorrento.
Had it 12 months now and have towed my 5.4 trailcraft to exmouth twice. Cost about $200 each way in fuel. 2.8 ton towing capacity, 4wd and for under $40,000.

Knob inside that you turn for low or high.
I looked at all the smaller 4wd's and the sorrento was better by far. The territory is more expensive just for the base model, you then have to pay extra for 4wd! My boat wieghs 1.4ton and i dont notice it on the back!
Sat on 110 kph all the way to and from exy. Got back last nite actually!

turbo diesel is the way to go when towing

my boat loaded up when we go away comes in at 3tonne and my navara 3ltr tuobo diesel pulls it ok, however it does struggle up bigger hills(but what doesnt)we cruised comfortably on about 90 to 95kmhand got around 400 to 450 to the tank

now i have it with gass injected it has more power so to do the same speeds i will be running less revs so should be cheaper to run or i just put my foot down for power

i know everyone has their own opinion on 4x4s but after driving the triton the other day i would never get one

the hilux is better now than it used to be for stability and also has the 3ltr td

but for price you can pick up a nissan navara from 04 to 05 at a reasonable price
