Aquaculture Help
Submitted by Peter Mac on Mon, 2009-03-02 14:14
Hey All,
Currently in the process of stocking the large soak (5000m2) on our property.
At this stage I am planning on stocking with Silver Perch and Marron. I have read all that I can find on the internet and am just about ready to start doing some trials...
Has anyone been down this path before, have any advice, relevant contacts etc.
Any assistance appreciated :)
Cheers,
Pete

DVDs
Found some good DVD,s over in the east about aquaculture and in particular silver perch. They were bought out by NSW fisheries. I dont remember the name but Iam sure a google search or quick phone call would sort that out.

Just be careful with how
Just be careful with how much flow the soak gets from rain events, marron can be a real prick and go on the march if they don't like the flavour. Some farms even go to the effort of building levees to deflect rains as well as small metal fences the buggers can't climb.

if you can get hold of Brett he is the gun on marron. If you stock with Y-1 (I think that is what they call less than 1 yr old marron) they dont tend to walk as they get used to the area. I will see if I brought the Book "Marron and red claw aquaculture" up with me. Otherwise look that up.
Miss the Marron fishing and breeding them in the backyard pond (big).

Marron walking is often a
Marron walking is often a response to an influx of different tasting water, not being introduced to a new locale. Thats why you have to control the topups to your damn.

Thanks Guys
Some runoff infto the soak during winter rains, but would think as it is fed by groundwater, if they don't like it to start with, the won't like it at all...... We have already had problems with scouring, have looked at putting in a bund to control flow, but worried that will just bust through at weakest point....
I guess a bit of trial and error is in need :)
Neels - any extra literature would be great...

Will try Pete
Dabbled a little with marron some years ago trying to get them fooled into breeding twice, but Cherax tenuimanus is no fool. We did that with a hot house and shortened hours with shade but they weren't fooled. As a hobbie it was fun+++. I looked last night but left the books in Mandurah in storage. No need for them up here in Karratha but I will try Brett and PM u his details. He is a guru with this stuff and always keen to help.
Cheers

It sounds commercial but he will help. Just tell him tthe mandurah marron doctor Neels says hello. You can also buy baby marron from him to stock.
Hope this helps.
