are any mulloway running yet,in the swan river?

hi every1 been trying shore based from mosmans to rocky bay in the last month ,for mulloway and all i have managed to catch 3 stingrays, tomomorrow nite i hope to catch my first mulloway in four years.what are the best baits and rigs lately.i am currently using a sliding  plastic sinker clip, with a number 3 or four star sinker, black crane swivel,1mtr 60lb jinkai leader ,double 5/o gamakatsu octopus hooks, using mulies or live tailor,is there better baits and rigs?

youve pretty much got the rig and bait spot on. if the current is slow, use a running ball sinker or even weightless. change your sinker according to the current. try and use 5/0-7/0 gama occy circles. if a mulloway picks a bait up, thers a lot higher chance of the hook staying put in the corner of its mouth.

doesnt get much better. altough u could try put at float on the trace about 40cm away from the bait so its just of the the bottom. and yeah if u dont get them on live tailor then they arent there

A mate got a 17kg one last

A mate got a 17kg one last week. 1st on for the season, but would have been a ressy fish!

He tried the last 3 nights in a row, perf tides n all...not even a run

Still recon it's too early yet. Shorty's on the money late nov/early dec will be the go. I'm not going to try till then..

As for the rig...make sure the sinker is running really freely! any weight felt by the fish they will drop it straight away!

If you get a run, don't set the hooks hard as you will rip the hooks straight out! Lift the rod tip and slowly set the hooks! Don't use cirlces either, as you will miss too many fish!

Also bump the hook size up to 6/0's

Also found that dead fresh baits are always better. Fat Spawning fish can't be bothered chasing and dealing with live baits!

LOL at fat spawning fish but so true....

In the surf it's different. In the quiet waters it's an art and the Mulloway will certainly play with things so the lighter the better. IMO the bigger the hooks and less of them the better. It's a bit like catching large Bream.. be patient and let them play and run.

got a 15kg fish a few years back on a mulie

Sat, 2009-10-24 15:37

use a berley bomb to drop chopped up mulies down where your baits are - use big ball sinkers with a bead infront of the knot cos the sinker will get caught on your knot - leave some slack  lineout and the reel in a rod holder with some loose drag on wen it starts to scream crank some drag on and strike gently - IF YOU USE BIG CHEMICALLY SHARPENED GAMA OCCIES THAT ARE WELL EXPOSED FROM YOUR MULIE BAITED HEAD DOWN ( LAST HOOK THROUGH THE GILL - MULLOWAY SWALLOW HEAD FIRST ) THE FISH SHOULD CATCH THE HOOKS AS SOON AS IT PICKS UP THE BAIT - be ready to chase them thru the moorings by using an anchor on a float which you can chuck over the side straight away - i lost a massive fish to the moorings before because i thought i could pull it to the boat  - and also dont forget time on the water = results
