Aron finally found that 30kg fish off the rocks!!

Getting a 30kg Blue groper has been a huge goal of ours for a long long time. There has been the odd one landed on handlines over 30 over the years but trying to stop a fish this large on a rod and reel setup is just phenomenaly difficult. We have hooked so many fish in the 20kg+ bracket and been destroyed. PE10 140lb tackle has helped us land a few more larger ones on a more regular basis, but that 30kg fish is a case of pulling as hard as you possibly can and praying the line doesn’t break and send you cartwheeling over the rocks. No idea on its actual weight but a 105cm fish went 25kg which was Arons old PB and this fish was 10-15cm longer than the 105cm brag matt he measured it with. Absolute dinosaur of a fish and one that is going to take some effort to beat!!

Honest question, is this a troll comment ? No comment regarding to how good the capture is, just seems to be a very directed and baited question.

Apologies if this is not the case...

No, I just thought at a certain size they had to be released since they undergo a sex change. Like a Barra. I’m happy to be corrected though.

the thing about big groper

Thu, 2018-04-26 09:11

the thing about big groper ime , is that they do not release well at all

they usually go so hard in the fight and capture that they are totally buggered and they blow the back out on them very often

better to target them as a catch and keep/eat for bigger models

they are good eating though at any size imo

great capture of the rocks , conditions look pretty good from the pics

Almost half way between Carnac and Rotto.......we used to feed it by hand with pencil urchins cut in half until they suddenly disappeared.  The one we used to feed had so so many scars around its mouth, bits of leader and hooks but was in really snaggy ground.  Have some video of it some where but on old Vhs tape not digital or I would post it for all to see.  Stunning fish mate, a true sight to behold and unbelievable achievement off the rocks

He was using pe10 line, Stella 20 completely locked on a mates spare rod which is a pe10 7’9” still pulled a lot of line on first hookup under huge pressure. Also lost another fish he couldn’t stop not long after this
