The Ashes: Do we have half a chance?

 I believe we do

dont under estimate the Aussies. I think if we are half a chance it going to be the with ball. We have a great list of good pacey swing bowlers who can reverse it. I think the dangermen are Cook and Prior. If Starc can swing the ball early I think he can soften up Cook. I believe this series is going to make Starc a superstar.

Obviously Clarke is our dangerman. He must play all 5 tests for us to have any chance, he'll be lucky to play 3 with his back injuries. Watson and Hughes must step up to the plate. We must see out Anderson. If Hughes has a good series, we are in with a fighting chance, and watch out for Rogers too. He has now played a few seasons in the County league and will know the pitch conditions very well.

All and all  I love being the underdog and I think the Aussies with send shockwaves into the England camp.

Cant wait!!

I put as much hope in the aussies winning the series as I do on west coast winning the grand final this year.  It's possible, but not going to happen.

People reckoned Anderson Silva would never be beaten in his entire career but he just got KTFO on the weekend. Anything is possible & it would be sweet to smash the poms again.

Sure they have a chance

I still think the best top order combination is Waston, Warner, Hughes, Clarke, and possibly place rogers in 5th. Ed Cowen would be the unlucky one to miss the first test.

If warner can see out the first 5-8 overs he usually goes on.

Problem with the bowling, they have only a 3 pronged space attack, and Lyon for spin. Has there been anything said about Watson bowling still? Last i read he was giving up bowling to pro-long his batting career.

This is the likely list.

Likely Australian team: Shane Watson, Chris Rogers, Ed Cowan, Michael Clarke (c), Phil Hughes, David Warner, Brad Haddin, Peter Siddle, James Pattinson, Mitchell Starc, Nathan Lyon

Great to see Boof as coach now I might add

Boof is very down to earth and doesn't believe in crap - if anyone can get the aussie's shit together it would be him. Yep they are the underdogs but definitely in with a chance.
I reckon Hughes and Rogers will open with Warner to play further down the list.

Our chances lie in our bowling. The batting is ok but prone to some woeful displays. Might be hard going to start with as the pitch by the sounds of it is rather dry and sporting some cracks.

Wed, 2013-07-10 16:59

Unfortunately the team lacks the leaders/stars of yester year. Hope the Aussies can do it, but i think the POMS have a edge. This series is the make or break series for some careers. It is a 2 horse race tho. Boof as coach increases our chances. If Arthurs was still coach we would have no chance.

I reckon we look more of a chance now than we did 4 months ago. Gonna need a bloody good run with injuries(Clarkes back) and a few batsmen to toughen up. Love having Boof as the coach.

Watching

Wed, 2013-07-10 18:28

The umpires are going to be watching for ball tampering because for some reason the Poms can get the ball to reverse swing when no other side can get it to do anywhere near it at the same stage of wear.
So its look out if they are eating peppermints, using sunscreen, slipping a finger down the bum crack or anything that will affect the way the ball travels.

Its going to come down to the bowlers and who can take 20 wickets. Although if Clarke can find the middle like he did last summer then we win. Having Harris and Bird as backup bowlers shows the strength we have bowling but pity Hilfy wasnt good included to have a look at them with the duke. Glad haddin is keeper, he deserves his spot but Steven Smith! holy shit! what the @^*# is he doing in the test side, cant bat cant bowl and as much as they say he can, he cant field

Top effort from Agar, I

Fri, 2013-07-12 04:34

Top effort from Agar, I really felt for him when he got out on 98. At least he went down smashing it & he's certainly put the poms (& the rest of the world) on notice. Love the way Boof slipped him in at 11 leaving the poms thinking he wasn't much of a batter. Now they know I hope he gets moved up the order but not too far, don't want to put the pressure on him too much, maybe in at 9.

Hopefully the rest of the batsmen can follow Agar & Hughes lead, bat some time, get in properly & let the score build up. No need to get out trying to swing hard at every ball from the get go.

Mon, 2013-07-15 14:22

He definitely hit it & in the end I reckon the right decision was made but I'm not real happy with the way the umpire came to that conclusion. There were two marks on the inside of the bat on hotspot but they were already there when the bat appeared from behind his leg, no definitive way to tell what caused those marks. There was a clear sound but for all the umpire knew that could have been a creaky bat handle, again, not definitive proof he hit it. The only real proof was when sniko was shown & the sound was clearly in perfect time to the ball passing the bat. The umpire doesn't have access to sniko (who knows why not) so I reckon it was a pretty brave call that could have backfired. Lucky for the umpire it was the right call. If sniko had shown that noise didn't time right with the ball passing the bat there would be alot of angry aussies right now. I still think we were ripped off though. We would have won that game if it wasn't for Aleem Durrrrrr missing the biggest outside edge of all time.

The referal system needs to be overhauled & to start with the third umpire should have access to all the technology, not just selected components. Better yet, get some decent on field umpires & get rid of the referal system altogether.

Lehmann's master stroke to hide the tail end in the middle order nearly paid off!

Great test, Jimmy was on fire & that's going to be an issue through the series. I think the boys will take great experience from trent bridge into lords, exciting stuff
