Submitted by Albee Mangles on Sun, 2013-07-14 13:13
I have a Humminbird 798CSI with internal GPS, and everytime i go out it takes the first 20 mins before the GPS will kick in?? anyone experienced this or know why it does it, its bloody annoying!! I have to restart it 15 times to get it to register....
Im ready to throw it over the side and get another brand???
Any ideas?

Sounds painfully
It is taking that time to find a satellite signal,so if you keep restarting it you might be delaying the process.
Maybe try turning it on when you get to the rigging area of the ramp so by the time your leaving the marina it has had time to pick up the signal.

hum gps
Why not fit an external antenna with an all sky view, any internal gps reciever is subject to signal degregation with relection from internal structures. They are not too expensive and will make a major difference in performance.

798 internal GPS
Most I wait is about a minute but 90% of the time its under 30 seconds
It takes ages........up to 5 minutes for my sat phone to register a signal!!
My 798 is 4.5 years old and never had a problem

Clear view to the sky to the east and north is important
as that's where most of the sats are. As most of the relpies here say, 15 to 30 secs should be a normal start time. If you haven't used the GPS for a while then iut needs to load the ephemeris (that's a list of locations of the sats.
Try this at home where you have clear view to the sky to the north and east - turn on the GPS and wait till it's running all ok. Trun it off. Turn it back on again. If the start-up time is quite short then it's all ok. If it take a long time then it's time to get the unit checked.

Cheers Guys
May have a reception issue, will check it again this weekend and try a few things. There is a handrail above it, stainless, wonder if this is causing an issue..

Yes the stainless would be an issue
And might seriously disrupt reception - even a fibreglass cabin can markedly effect performance on hand held devices - we usually place on the rear deck or roof if stationary to ensure quick performance
