auto electrical advice wanted
Not fishing related but need some independent advice on auto electrics. I have a 2005 hyundai terrecan. We are having issues with the battery not charging properly. The battery and the alternator have been checked by the battery people as the battery is still under warrenty. They say both are ok and there is a problem getting charge from the alternator to the battery. We had a junior mechanic experienced with hyundais service the car today (private cashy job - he is still an apprentice and about to qualify as a mechanic) . He is not confident with auto electrical stuff. He run a test and believes the harness has burnt out. The test results are...
Volts 12.4
Measured 401 cca
Rating 540 cca
Battery type regular flooded
Battery location in vehicle
Cranking 10.08v
Time 0.84s
Low output
No load 13.42v
Loaded 12.48v
Is there an auto electrician out there that can provide some independent advice on my info to date and an indication as to how much it will cost to fix???

You mentioned battery in car?
As in inside the rear cargo area or something?
if so it sounds like bolt drop to me. Often bought about by wiring to and from the battery to the starter motor not being of sufficient size. The wiring either gets too hot and too much resistance or a lot of the time the earth wiring in particular from the battery to the body or even from the body to the engine has a poor connection.
if you do some googling you can get the info on how to check the resistance of the wiring at the end of each connection point. Hope this somewhat helps

Its just the standard car
Its just the standard car battery in the engine bay. It's not a second battery.

regulator
if it's not charging properly then maybe it's the regulator. If you get this checked out at least it eliminates one area of cause.
12.4v under load indicates that the altenator is working but 10v cranking could be a bit low and indicate a bugged battery.

10v cranking is fine as long
10v cranking is fine as long as it doesnt drop below 9.5v. Run a lead straight from the alternator to the battery to see if it improves. Like a said in the PM I have seen terracans burn up the main alternator lead. Give us a call if you want it looked at.
