Aux.battery charging on Evinrude

I have a 2004 200hp Evinrude that has done 76 hours (Model no. E200FPXSRB) (long story) I want to charge an auxillary battery from the motor. The manual shows the aux.battery charging outlet point but no information other than 'see your dealer' (and good luck with that) I have checked the outlet with an Amp meter and it is charging ok but when I revved the motor the charge rate went to 20 amps, my battery was down a bit. I need to know if this outlet is regulated, one would assume so if it was put there for that purpose but 20amps!?

Can anyone help.

20 amps sounds Ok to me,  its the voltage that is being regulated as per the info in the owners manual. If your battery is a bit low on charge the charge current will be fairly high until the terminal voltage rises and then it will drop off.

Thanks for that, actually the manual states under Alternator, '35amp fully regulated'. The amp meter I connected to test the outlet maxed at 20amp so it could have been putting in  up to 35amp just seems a lot but the battery was down a bit so I assume as you say it will draw the max until the charge level rises. I am going to install the setup and see how it goes in use. thanks again

Go to Chivers Marine and they will be able to sell you the cable that plugs into the outlet on the motor.

Evinrude Aux charging outlet

Thanks for your input, actually the outlet is simply a cable (from the alternator/regulator) terminated at a stud so it only needs a ring terminal connected cable to the battery, which is easy.

Thanks again

Not really the amp out put

Not really the amp out put that will charge your battery... Needs to have 13-14volts , amps will probably only effect you if you have hig load demand when you are using the boat , if you need to charge a second battery & are worried that the standard alternator will struggle then fit VSR (voltage sensitive relay)
