Bag limit
Submitted by fab on Thu, 2013-07-11 20:42
Mate and i are ready to go up north soon, and were wondering how much we are allowed to bring home between us, (if we catch anything that is). We are both keen to do the right thing. Any feedback would be awsome.
Cheers, Fab

since when did you have to
since when did you have to have a licence to possess fish ashore?
Unless Ive missed something its never been that way and still isnt.

OK
if thats the case then my understanding was different.
So hyperthetically you could have a household where say Dad had a RFBL and fished within his bag limits but if say he had his mrs and 10 kids at home he could legally have up to 240kg of fillets in his freezer?
Seems absurd

I thought
I thought the new rules were supposed to be more simple and easier to understand. lol . It looks like there are no possesion limits for your place of residence anymore. So if the hyperthetical dad labled all the fish properly with all his kids names , it appears to be perfectly legal . Yes it does seem absurd.

why? If it wasnt that way you
why? If it wasnt that way you couldnt even give a rec caught whiting to your granny without her breaking the law?

I tried to edit
I tried to edit my comment but you beat me to it . Igot that wrong and the limits do apply to your residence. I agree Rob , i was just trying to point out the rules seem to have big holes in them and arn't that easy to understand .
The whole possession limit is flawed, eg : If i caught my 2 demersals and 3 pelagics that's all good and legal, but as soon as i fillet them and end up with more than 20kg , i'm breaking the law . I'd have to give granny a whole heap more than a whiting to keep within my limit .
It just seems the more rules they make , the less any of it makes sense .

not if you have your 5 kids
not if you have your 5 kids with you
too true Grant, there is always someone who will bend the rules too far, and many more who will want to act as your moral compass.
Most of my kids have RFBL's as it is, so we dont have to stress over it too much.
Not so long ago on here there was someone (cant recall who atm) arguing that 20kg of fillets was too much but that if they caught a single large fish they should be allowed more than 20kg-a bet each way...
Also, I havent read the rules again (cant be blowed to be honest!) but I think you dont need to label the individual fish if it all belongs to people who are present or live in the residence. If Im at the islands and have 15kg of fillets you dont need to label if there are 2 licences on board. You can also just label the entire esky with the names.

Yeah it shits me Rob that
Yeah it shits me Rob that guys like me who get the chance once a year are labled freezer fillers because we bag out up north. Why the f^&k not. I could go to Kailis and buy the 20kg but I'd much rather the adventure. I bet for every 20 kg a guy like me catches there's probably 50kg of commercial waste.

similar.Been to the islands 5
similar.
Been to the islands 5 or 6 times this year, but the boat rarely goes in the water for a day trip. Just the way it is for us.
We get checked every time and sometimes 2 or 3 times and havent had strife except last year, when Fisheries confiscated, then returned all our fish 2 days later.
I dont have a lot of interest in C&R for its own sake, only incidental.
