Barrel Metro YFT
Submitted by JohnF on Sun, 2014-05-04 19:24
First time out for ages as busy at work, we got a dhu, baldie, a few B/B's and this YFT after having a quick troll to break up the jigging.
Tim landed the tuna on 10 kg mono, the thing went very hard and he did well to land it. It went 19.6 kg on the scales.

Fishing with mono
If you don't mind me asking why do you trawl with mono, I use a mono leader but not all mono. just curious and thinking I might learn something.

Nice John, you sure know how
Nice John, you sure know how to find metro v tails!
I am, as I've said, merely competent. But in an age of incompetence, that makes me extraordinary.

Mono for trolling...
...generally a better option because of the stretch. Boat going one way, fish going another means a pretty good jolt; one that can tear hooks out and/or break something.
A longish mono leader backed by braid will take care of the shock absorption issues, as well as allowing the outfit to double as a bottom bouncer or possibly even a jigger, but a lot of fishers would just go mono only and leave it as a dedicated troller...only advantage braid gives there is line capacity which isn't a big issue in metro waters.

Mono all the way for trolling
Mono all the way for trolling mate. As Auslobster said, plus its a lot more forgiving in the tangle department if running a full spread and more forgiving on other lines in the event of a multiple hook-up and crossed lines. Might run a deep-diver on braid in close. Always humorous to see someone lose a fish and a lure to crossed lines of the bloke hell bent on running light braided spin gear. Always leave my jig outfits a little down on braid and just top shot with 80m of mono. Monos cheap, braid isn't.

As above, mono is way more
As above, mono is way more forgiving on the strike and we very rarely loose fish on mono as it has heaps of stretch so you can more easily keep in contact with the fish without the line going slack.
10 kg is great for Perth, smaller models are still fun and whilst fish like this are not common in Metro waters, they are still gettable on 10 kg if your patient.
However, after loosing well over 100m on the first run, I must admit I thought we may have been undergunned......

Great work guys! Smashing it.
Haha I agree Tim - better get a few curls in between now and Oman. The 1 arm curls at the pub in bora bora don't count either :-)
When asked by a non-fisherman 'how many fishing rods do you really need?' the correct answer is either:
n+1 (where n is the number of fishing rods you currently own); or
n-1 (where n is the number of fishing rods which would cause your significant other to dump you.
