Beach and Creeks

Howdy, I'm new to town (Karratha) and just chasing some tips for places to fish off the beaches and in the creeks. Went out to Sam's Creek next to the shed today, had a few bites till my rod tip snapped off. I'm pretty limited at the moment because I dont have a 4WD or boat and my gear's not really set up for fishing up here so any info on bait and set ups would be much appreciated.

welcome to town brett. for the basics all you really need around here is bait caster on a smallish, say 4 to 6kg rod. that will pretty much cover you for now. The best bet is jump on google earth and check out the coast. look for anything that looks fishy. try the rocks around sampson or i have herd the causway is sposed to be quite good. otherwise try the burrup ie hearsons or whitnell bay. if your not having any luck just burly up. 9 times out of 10 there will be a school of trevs or queenies not too far away.

For the first year up here we were land based

It can be hit and miss but the causeway at sampson on a run out tide is good with surface lures or a shallow minnow. But it is shallow and you often get snagged especially when using soft plastics and you are a bit slow on the wind. Snapbacks in white and tango Dancers work for me here.

Any of the beaches on an incoming tide hold whiting and some of them are thumpers. I play around with the little guys and have a set line out with a live whiting or whatever I have caught on it.

9/10 you will get a good run on this and then the fun is on. At Hearsons caught everything from shovelnose sharks (common), rays, sharks, quennies, threadies and trevs on the live bait rig. On the "fun" rig have landed all sorts of odds and sods including some good flatties.

Good fun with a beer in the hand.

Hope this helps a little, but I have to admit that the boat has opened up a fantastic playground.
