Beach Bashing For Spaniards

An alarm going off at 2am is never anyones favourite thing. Especially if its cold and you have to go to work. But , its suprisingly easy when you have been waiting for this fishing trip to come round and its finally here. I sprang out of bed and had a travel mug ready to go in no time , a quick run thru that i had everything , check the weather and i was off to mick's house. Our destination Wagoe and our target Narrow Barred Spanish Mackerel off the beach! 5mins down the road and id realised id left my sunnies at home. I would later pay for that but never mind too late to turn back. Jumping out and throwing all the gear into micks Navara including rodholders, ice, bait ect and a quick stop to pick up ty we headed to the servo for some tucker and fluid we hit the road for the 2hr trip trying to beat the sun and the other fishos we knew would be out hunting spannies from wagoe with the good easterlys blowing! The trip passed quickly and quietly albeit cold and we hit the beach ready to roll after a quick deflation of the tyres the fun part was gettin closer! The 4wd passed with a few stops more deflation and some pushing we finally hit our beach feeling on cloud 9 and not a minute too soon for as soon as we commenced rigging up 1 no 2 hang on 5 cars suddenly where headed our way. (not many clearings for easy fishing along this stretch) They soon turned back to find other options and with the breeze at our backs and the sun just sending a glow over the water we set our first baits out. Gee they look awesome and its no wonder the macks love them skipping and hopping from wave to wave and it definently proved the point less than 2mins into the sesh when i thought i saw a sizeable splash under micks bait and this ratchet suddenly came to life! Already!!! alas somehow it missed the hook points and mick managed to retreive just the head of his pike bait.Tyron soon hooked up aswell and again it missed the hooks.. I was beginning to think maybe i should let a line out instead of taking pics when mick hooked up solid on our first fish of the morning. And while that went thru the motions tyron hooked up solidly aswell! a DOUBLE yeeehaaa... Mick knocked his fish up pretty quick on the 24kg LBG gear he was running and we soon had 10kgs of spannie bled and on the sand. Ty's fish turned out to be abit more stubborn and soon after 14kgs of spannie was sequred on the gaff... Crikey photographer and gaff man the boys where asking too much i had to wet a line.. My first attempt was running smoothly and the bait looked happy (if you could say that) about 250m off the beach when ty spotted a splash on the bait. Just as i manned the big penn ready for action a MONSTOROUS splash charged down the gardie and it was gone. my balloon drifted off towards the abrolhos and i was left cursing as we where runnning short on balloons already and i had to wait for the other boys now.... To cut abit of chit chat Mick got his 2nd fish and bag limit about a hr later after a few more misses and i finally had another crack at the razor gang we knew was waiting... We waited for some time our baits working and the sun getting higher. Ty missing 2 more fish and i still sat patiently eyes glued on the skipping splashing bait over 300m out waaaaaaiting for something.. pllllease... Then as soon i left it to get a drink my reel screamed the boys yelled at the big surface strike id just missed! as usual... grabbing my new 24kg LBG stick outta the holder and setting the hooks i was finnnnaally into my first landbased mac! a good 10min fight off the beach and over 400m of line back onto the reel later a beautifully conditioned fish of 16kgs was on the beach! you Fu*king RIPPEEER Another 13.5kg fish soon joined the fray and i had my 2 fish atlast! To cut a long story short we took home our 2 fish each as lettin them go after a long fight off the beach just wont work and fresh spaniard is always nice on the plate and the fish where trunked before being iced down for the trip home. Mick took 6hits to land 2 fish , tyron took 7 hits to land his 2 and i only had the 3hits for my 2 but didnt have anywhere near as much water time as the other boys. With smiles on our faces and sore arms and shoulders we headed back to gero. I know where ill be next time im after a mack and the winds blowing east! Beach Bashing For Big Spaniards

Islands and Wagoe

Fri, 2009-05-08 07:37

Nice report Poddy. Some people would think that you just dont work after being at the islands for the weekend fishing and then off to Wagoe. Bastard!!! Good snaps mate, we will have to work on the island report. Looks like you got the knack!!

Pity the missus has more snaps of fish than us!

Top stuff

Well done Poddyfish. Gotta love it when a plan comes together.

Did you see any surface action out past the balloons or was it pretty quiet in that regard?
