What would be a good rod and reel for beach fishing to get that extra distance? How tall should the rod be?

Beach Rods
Mate, 12 foot is pleanty if your fishing the metro beaches, I'd go for a cheap combo if your just new to it - then you'll get the hang of it and want to spend a bit more. $150 can buy you a pretty decent combo that will do you well. Visit one of the site sponsors - they'll give the knowledge to get what want. As with everything practise makes a better cast....

I heard that the penn applause and the penn accord were good reels.

Moonrakers
Moonrakers are an awesome rod and probably next on my shopping list but they would want to good for 400$
