Nice Ron!! the missus picked

Nice Ron!! the missus picked up a hooter the other day & it tasted awesome but kept some for bait. I took off one of the tentacles which was similar width of scallops so we cut chunks the same size flattened them out and just dusted them in seasoned flour and cooked quick super quick. Unreal feed mate, I will be hard pressed to keep any of the next one for bait!

With Yewie, better than squid

Tue, 2011-04-26 18:52

With Yewie, better than squid for sure, tasty buggers & I had no problem with the big one we ate. I found the meat to be sweeter & a better texture, let me know how the curry goes!

hahaha, I had plenty of antidote....home brew!

They can be very curious at times.  I do have video, but nothing real exciting.  I once watched a big one follow my mate around for about 30 minutes on a dive.  The cuttle was very interested in my mates fins.  The cuttle would confront me a few times for a scratch on the head aswell.

Back to eating them - dice up the feeder arms (the very long soft arms - 2 of), flour, egg mix, crumb and shallow fry - awesome.

Cheers Pete

We had one acting as a body guard for a Port jackson!

Tue, 2011-04-26 20:37

When we got closer to the sleeping Jackson, the cuttle got between us adn went RED. Think he must have seeem his reflection in our masks. good sized one too.

If someone can tell me how to add a photo to a thread, i'll throw it up.

Cuttlies are tasty. Bit more

Tue, 2011-04-26 20:44

Cuttlies are tasty. Bit more flavourful than squid and a bit firmer. Had one recently and cooked up great.

Wont get a tube off them, you'll get a big flat triangle. From that you can cut it into 'chips'. On big cuttlies, the flesh can be pretty thick, so adjust the slices as needed. They squirm around when you put them on the pan though :p. I've usually just done it salt and pepper. Will have to try more recipes for squid and cuttlie though.

Huge

Cant complain about a bonus like that. I've got a few around that size and used to use them as bait. Not any more lol.

I eat the hood and shooter legs then use the rest as bait. As Lamby said , cut the shooter's into scallop sizes bits and eat up . Yum. Yum.

I use the head for bait, and hood for Dinner, same as squid.

Quick tip, to tenderise the Cuttley or squid, mash up some Kiwi fruit and marinade for a few hours,

Scape off and cook accordingly, you will not be disappointed.

nice size cuttlie. they are fantastic eating. try marinating in garlic, fried up in a creamy sauce. or dust in flour and pan fry in butter cooked in seconds and delicious. why waste the flavor with curry

They are amazing creatures to dive with some times following you around like a puppy. They also have this freaky ability to break up thier sillohette by changing to a camoflage of blotches and making thier skin stand up in little spikes all over giving the look of a piece of seaweed. Very smart. So it is a little hard to take them and I only do when need a feed and nothing else around because as said they do taste good.

I have also tried the Kiwi fruit marinade I believe its the enzymes in the fruit that do the tenderising.

Yep correct it's the enzymes

Thu, 2011-04-28 11:09

Yep correct it's the enzymes & pineapple also has the same effect, only use on older squid / cuttly. Plenty of restuarants keep their squid in containers of mashed pineapple / kiwifruit
