Big Dhu School
Submitted by Spence on Fri, 2018-12-28 07:51
Seen a number of dhus schools over the years, usually high and narrow, but this one had to be the biggest I’ve seen, purely due to the width. Practically on nothing but a small bump in 50s. School was over 50m wide and 10m high. Weights from two trips were between 9-11kg, all males but non of them dominant yet. (Small fin).
any theories out there why males school up like this? Seen it before many times, but not to this scale.

Yeah its spawning
they form up large spawning agregations, much like the snapper do, but in the warmer months, mainly around Jan and Feb.

Males in big numbers
School up , not far away there will be school off just females also. Not sure but makes me think some sort off dominance thing happening.unsure just a guess. Seen this many times on ouch ( flat hard coral) asshole same sort off ground. 2 weeks later after fishing spot far few times . It was mixed females and males hundreds off them. Once I got dominant one bang they where gone.only my belief on big aggregation.nice fish

Hey Spence, love it when
Hey Spence, love it when they school up like that.
Whats the theory behind the feather?
Is it the dominant one has the biggest?
I have noticed smaller fish say around 10 kilo with different size feathers but didnt know it was a dominance thing.

When we found it, it was over
When we found it, it was over in 2 weeks.. still produces fish but we barely ever get there.. small, isolated lumps..a long way from anywhere.. we released a few 12-15kg models.. obviously took great care of them on way up, etc and no pictures.. and atleast 50m of school stacked up.. the big white grub got hit on the drop every time, if it wasn’t heavy you could shake it off and get a bigger one.. had one other mate have the same off two rocks
