Big Shark off Mindaries

I'm posting this report for a friend of mine who had an encounter with a large shark yesterday ( Thursday )

They had hooked a large Bronzie and fought it for a while then it became just a dead weight. They were in amazed to see what was left of it as is came to the surface .

Shortly after a visiter started to circle the boat.

Estimated at over 4 m it stayed around then decided to have a munch on the outboard wich now started to worry the guy's .

The boat owner decided to give it a whack with the gaff and all hell broke loose.

Now with a 3m gaff stuck in its side it went crazy and started to free jump, on the third jump it nearly landed on the transom and the disappeared into the deep and was not spotted again. The owner of the boat knows his sharks and says it was a Great White . I'm no expert but didn't think a GW could jump that high, but ive never seen one with a gaff stuck in its side either .

All i can say is You Guys are Crazy . lol . Cheers Grant .

Crazy stuff and great photos. The 1st shark was a decent one, the one that chomped him must've been huge

Why would you try and belt a big shark with a gaff though??

I thought it was a big Mako too, but they say GW. They did get some film of it swimming around the boat ( might clarify the ID ) but i havn't seen it yet .

Yeah the Bronzie was quite large and estimated at 7 ft .

First look and I thought short finned mako but after looking at the bite marks think white pointer as makos usually shred rather than cut cleanly.

Bet he doesn't stick a gaff into a free swimmer again in a hurry.

Looks like a double backward sommersault with a half twist, degree of difficulty for a mako = 0.  The one surprising thing though is the gaff hanging out of it.

Your friend was extremely lucky that it didn't touch down in the boat.

only a great white has the audacity to attack your boat like that. Good shot with the gaff that will slow him down some. Pity it wasnt hanging out his head.

I've had

Fri, 2012-05-18 19:40

a 7-8ft Mako come up to the back of my tinny and have a chomp at the outboard before.

I few cubes of Bonito for berley then one with a hook inside soon had him hooked.

20 jumps and 15mins later he was along side the boat for release.

Mako's are an awesome Shark and it wouldn't surprised me one iota if this was indeed a BIG Mako.

Wouldn't be 'poking' a freeswimmer with a gaff though. Not much thinking went into that move

Quite a few years ago...

Fri, 2012-05-18 19:46

A solid mako jumped into a half cab boat off Binningup after being hooked. Apparently the two chaps fishing got on the foredeck near the anchor well as the fish went ballistic until it died - completely demolished the interior of the boat. Carnarvonite may have heard of the situation  - I'm sure it was 20+ years ago!

Bailed out

Fri, 2012-05-18 20:47

Seems they hooked it and after it did the usual couple of jumps it charged the boat. When it jumped in the boat one bloke bailed out over the side and the other was up on the bow, leaving the mako to demolish everything in the boat then flick itself back over the side. As soon as it hit the water , the bloke in the drink reckons he jumped straight out of the water and into the boat without even touching the side.

They showed pics in the local paper of the inside of the boat, pedestal seats torn out of the deck, bite marks on the side pockets and tackle strewn all over the place. and that was from only a 7 footer so they said if I remember correctly.

Caught more makos in the area of Cape Naturaliste and Wright's bank than anywhere up the coast. Fisheries research backs this up with data collected by pros going back over twenty years plus.

Never heard of a GW clear the water in such an extreme fashion
All Whites ive seen have only just cleared the water
Not been 3 metres up! (Going by the gaff length in picture) Also 3 metres is a long gaff to have on  boat must be a big boat
I'd have to say its a mako

If it was a Mako it would have to be a Longfin Mako as they are the only Mako that grows over 2.5m. It looks as though the fins arent long enough to me and that shark is meant to be rare and its meant to stay in deep water?

i'd say mako as the dorsal fin isn't typical shape of a gw's and also the biting end of the scale is too narrow in my opinion to be a gw and it does look more like a mako but in saying that i could be wrong

When asked by a non-fisherman 'how many fishing rods do you really need?' the correct answer is either:

n+1 (where n is the number of fishing rods you currently own); or

n-1 (where n is the number of fishing rods which would cause your significant other to dump you.

Not sure if it's the same shark, but it looks very very similar! A large school of babies probably about 30-50cm just swimming around near the rocks on the inside area. Whenever I shined my light upon them they quickly scatter and swim off.

How'd the pics! Crazy the one where its leaping out with the gaff attached.

I have to agree with most people with the mako call. Pointed nose and acrobatics point to a mako, but tellingly on the jump shot, the undersides of the pectorial fins are completely white, not black tipped like a great white.

I don't know the owner of the boat , my mate was his deckie for the day and sent me the pictures. I have to agree the comments on Perth Now are quite funny . And channel 7 have a different story every time they have showed the pictures.

Well i can tell you the first pic is a mako. White sharks are not blue like that, they have fatter fins not thin fins. The dorsal also is very thin on that which calls it a mako. Other very very easy way to tell is the teeth.

Just so you all know. My best mates girl friend writes for Perth Now. She is the biggest bitch i have ever met in my life. Even her own boy friend doesnt like her....He asked me the other night. "Glenn whats wrong with her?" I said. She is a journalist. That means she is a bitch. Problem solved.
