Big Swan River Flathead

Things were going very slow around Applecross Way with only a few small Flatties around 40cm and heaps of blowies been caught with my mate Mitch.
I changed to an old hardbody lure with rusty hooks that I hadn't used for a while. Something had a bite but I only felt a dead weight as I was reeling in.
Soon as this monster saw me it took off. We were about 50-60 metres off shore and bringing in this beast on light gear was quite a task. This Flattie came in at 61cm which is the biggest I've ever seen in nearly 17yrs of fishing in the River. Previous best was 55cm and I thought that was big! It was released as I do with all fish.

Great fish John, biggest bar-tail I've seen or heard of. One of the best captures posted this year although it probably won't get the recognition. By the way 40cm bar-tails are still a quality fish LOL.
The best reason for doing what's right today is tomorrow.

I wish I had of taken a photo of it against a tape measure. The good thing is that my best mate measured it. Sent a story and photo to Friday's West fishing column and never got a mention. (they don't understand) Thanks for your comment

nice! 6cm under the one i seen caught at herrison island around last month. I think this year there are quite a few 60cm + models though as I've spooked some pretty big ones wading flats next the freeway

Good work all the way, the best flatty i have extracted fromt the swan is about 52cm.
