Bit of fun yesterday

Had a bit of fun yesterday with the salmon and some big tailor that are schooling with them. Got bitten off using whole herring 4 times, some brute greenbacks swimming around. Younger brother managed to stay connected to a nice one.

PS. Sorry Browndog, I know I promised a tailor/salmon session but it was a late minute decision to stay in close as the wind was playing silly buggers.

Awesome stuff!

What's the hookup to bite off ratio when fly-fishing for tailor without wire? I'm afraid to use little (and expensive!) whiting lures in certain parts of the Peel for that very reason, and the fish I see in there are tiddlers compared to your ones!

We didnt lose any

Sun, 2014-11-02 07:45

We didnt lose any fortunately, as the fish were all around the boat we could pick and choose what fish we wanted to target, if the tailor started to chase the fly we'd pull it straight out of the water and throw it back in front of the salmon. That one that Cody got took it on the sink and we just thought it was a salmon going by the size of it, but we were wrong. We called it for a salmon all the way to the boat. A mate on another boat lost quite a few flys to tailor

Nice work, got a couple of nice sized tailor myself on Saturday. Saw a few guys working the fly around picking up one really fat salmon. For a brief period a large school of salmon cruised by but didn't strike any baits.

yeah the boat in my avatar have had for many years now.

and as for the deckie ...why not ...although I have a few good dhu spots 20km + out .....I don't seem to do that great in the shallower stuff (Most of my fishing is dragging the boat north!)

every time I see your reports you seem to do fantastically. always happy to get a different perspective....heheh

Tailor teeth vs flies

Sun, 2014-11-09 04:56

 Hi Beau,

if you want to stay connected to the Tailor on fly and not hinder your chances of a salmon too much, try sticking 6 inches of dull coloured 50ib braid on the end of the leader as a bite tippet.

It will save you plenty at the fly shop or vice..
