black magic

I recentyl had 2 paternoster rigs break at the bend that passes through the eye of the hook. The line was not reefed and the knots all held good; this suggests that it was a line problem.

Used Black Magic fluorocarbon leader, 20 lb.

I have never had this happen before, not with black magic ( in 20/30/40 and 60 lb) nor with rovex and penn fluorocarbon leaders.

I do look after my spooled lines, they are kept in a watertight and opaque box so I do not think that sunlight nor water has degenerated the line.

May have been a "bad batch" of line ?

Just curious whether others have had the same experience with the same line?

What brand of flurocarbon do you AVOID and what brand do yuo PREFER?

like that barneyboy

never thought of that but will consider it - of course it does mean more hassle when changeing hooks but for the larger rigs that is not often.  Good tip, thanks.

Check the eye of the hook.

Check the eye of the hook.  Maybe the eye of the hook is slightly open and wearing through the mono?  The end of the eye where it meets the shank.

20LB

I have had problems with 20LB leader as well, 40cm tailor genuinely have too much breaking strain for it -1 for sure. I have since switched to Rovex 20LB with no issue.

In my opinion i think the black magic fluro is crap. It's like wire and sucks for knots.

North West Blowies

That is common result and it looks as clean as a knife cut.

Hey ricey

more detail:  one was a skippy that my son had brought onboard and with one flap on board the line gave at the point described.

the other was a good puller, call it for a 5-7kg dhu, brought half way up to the boat then ... the break at the same position .

Sounds like a nor wester has had a chew and you were lucky to land the skippy. The amount of times I've seen nor westers mistaken for dhu's. Dirty buggers

Have you been using this

Thu, 2015-01-29 12:31

Have you been using this setup for long? I would've thought 20lb was a bit small in diameter to use like this--(looped), good chance it could get into the gap where the end of the eye meets the shank, where a heavier line wouldn't.No fan of Black magic leader material either, have tried it, stick with Jinkai or Super Jinkai, now.

well that is a good point

Thu, 2015-01-29 12:43

I had previously used the 20lb black magic for snelled rigs only, thus no loop to the hook.

As I mentioned earlier the line did not appear chaffed at contact point with the eye but that may infact be the problem in this instance.

Not uncommon

I use 100lb leader when bottom bashing in the same set up as you. Last couple of times out we have been cleaned up by sambo's. Get two fish on and they go in opposite directions and one breaks off at the hook. Got sick of re-doing rigs. Nothing wrong with the leader. Perhaps a different paternoster set up? Heavier leader?

 That very occasionally

Thu, 2015-01-29 15:41

That very occasionally happens to me with the leader I use (80lb) so I now put the leader through the eye of the hook twice.

Blowies down south and BM line

Thu, 2015-01-29 16:32

Around bunkers and eagle bay they are now everywhere. I lost a few rigs to them and also landed a few. If they are this far down they would be in bunno as well for sure. I have never had a problem with BM leader line and it is the only one I would trust when on something big. Max
