Black Marlin

Couple of pic's of Marlin that i shot the other day. Shot it with a 1.4 edge fitted with a Aussie reel.

Towed me around a bit but was lucky the water wasn't to deep.

It went 73.1kg and tasted better than i thought it would.

parkety-puck-yeah! nice fish Geespot. whereabouts are you here? looks around some of the stations?

that's definitely on the hitlist... I doubt I'd actually go looking for one (whilst diving), but if one swam in front of me, I reckon I'd risk a gun!

I also have an opinion, and that is: you are still a douchebag, and you should stick your opinion up your arse.

the bloke just nailed a dream, once in a lifetime fish. if you cant give him the credit it deserves, the least you could do is to just not say anything.

 Little blacks are awesome to

Little blacks are awesome to eat. Much more sustainable than keeping a 30 year old snapper or red.

Dale stick to the footy threads mate. If you have nothing nice to say don't say anything at all. Didn't your mum tell you that?

Top catch mate, I have never

Thu, 2016-08-11 11:30

Top catch mate, I have never caught a Marlin but I would have no problem knocking it on the head if it's going to be eaten, every one goes on about how good a capture and kill of a big dhu or red emperor but as dodgy said far more sustainable, not sure on the growth rates of Marlin but that fish can't be more than 5 years old, how old is a 18kg dhu that everyone thinks it's great to kill?

Trophy Hunter

Thu, 2016-08-11 15:16

Yes i am a trophy hunter like most fisho's we go out spend lots of money on fuel/bait/ice/gear/ maintenance and time to catch that one fish. On the West coast only a small hand full of Marlin have ever been shot and landed by spearfishmen and on this day i was very very lucky. I have done the right thing by the fish we cared for (lots of ice) filleted it up not wasting any of the meat, I have the bill and Tail which are going in the shed and all the scraps were turned into Mackerel.

We tried it a few ways.

First attempt i tried cooking like i would mackerel in the pan with olive oil and butter but this dryed it out to much so that bach was turned into fish cakes which tasted really good. Then tried it just seared then thinly sliced with a little soy sauce this was nice. The last lot we had it was put into a red curry and came up a real treat.

I would have to say it is a bit stronger in flavour but all round good I would like to try it in a smoker mind you it would be hard to beat smoked Coral Trout.

Epicness! I would never have

Thu, 2016-08-11 16:49

Epicness!
I would never have the balls to do this!

Was just chatting to an old fella I work with and he was telling us about old days in the 70's off the back of the reef in Coral Bay hunting Spanish Macks diving, showed him your catch and loved it.
He told a coupla good yarns about trying to stop monster GT's with a spear haha.
Under water pic looks so good.
Well done!

I've caught a few blacks on

Thu, 2016-08-11 19:05

I've caught a few blacks on the east coast, both at Bermagui and further north out from Ballina, never eaten one, they've all been released to swim another day. If you wanted to keep one to eat the captain would cut your nuts out.

Yep, top catch

Thu, 2016-08-11 22:09

As an ex-spearo who never put a spear into anything bigger than a 50lb YTK, that is awesome. Black marlin are not under pressure, most are released anyway, high growth rate. I'd rather see that speared than somebody holding up a 40lb female dhu, which will need to be filleted with a chainsaw anyway.

Just out of personal interest, now that you have done it--if another of about the same size turned up and presented for a shot further down the track, would you do it again?

Would i do it again? Not sure, but I would try hard to shoot it with a camera.

Shooting this fish was the easiest dive i have made. Landing it was the hard part, it towed me around for about half hour and would have to been about 1 to 2 miles covered.

Have been in the water with a few free swimmers but never with my gun handy, when filming sharks or whales. Would love to ping one but would definitely have the trigger finger pulsing a bit deciding  to go or not. Awesome catch.
