Yep Wirrah, I actually don't mind them, take on any flavour you want to throw at them and have a texture similar to cray.

Looks like mixed opinions on taste Hairyone!

had a quick search seems they grow to 50cm and are common. I see them sitting in the bottom of caves now and then while diving. Did you freeze it for eating later or chuck it back? Maybe they are like Blue Morwong/Queen snapper - half the people I talk to say morwong are shit and half say they are great to eat - I gave a big queenie I caught off rotto to a workmate last summer and its still sitting in her freezer cause her boyfriend told her they are "shitfish" I still have never eaten one. I hear wirrah vary on taste depending on what they eat - mine must have been eating the shit that comes straight out of the Kalbarri sewerage system!

Taste

A lot depends on your tastes and what you have heard people say before you eat it.
If someone had told you that whiting taste like cow droppings you would sort of expect it when in realty its the opposite. Queens snapper IMO are good eating and I don't even bother to cut the brown strip of flesh off, wirrah and all of its close cousins are good as long as you treat them gently and clean or fillet them asap. Knife jaws are another fish that have a crap reputation they don't deserve.

IMO dhufish is vastly over rated and when I was living down south would prefer pink snapper instead.

It was close to 50cm and I

Wed, 2014-01-01 12:02

It was close to 50cm and I threw it back as I didn't know what it was. We catch a lot of them but haven't had a chance to get a good photo of them before.
Ill fry one up fresh next time and give it ago( we usually cook something up while fishing).

I agree with the personal taste thing.......A few people I know call Mulloway "Neighbours fish", but I reckon they are good eating.....same as Sweetlip. A lot depends on bleeding, keeping cold and freshness in my opinion.
Anyone know a legal size etc?

Cheers
