Bloody dogs

damn dogs-they find a way into your heart....

Passed away this afternoon at 3 yrs old-looks like heart failure after the vet had a look, while laying in the sun on the patio.

No sign of distress, snake, or poison. I wouldnt have even known there was anything wrong except she didnt snap up as the door opened.

did you have an autopsy done

Thu, 2014-05-15 21:28

did you have an autopsy done Neil? We were considering it but the vet was quite clear that unless something is in the stomach its quite unlikely to find an answer.

Also that as there was no sign of distress, vomiting, shaking etc and difficult to diagnose heart failure.

Both dogs had been for a walk an hour before at the beach and both fine, looking for scraps at lunch then noticed she wasnt following the big fella around...

Big call I know

Thu, 2014-05-15 22:16

But being at the beach only just before any chance she could have eaten a blowfish?

i know they have claimed their fair share of dogs is the past.

either way sorry to hear of your loss. My 2x Labradors are like children to me so I will be devistated when they pass on.

very good chance-she chewed

Thu, 2014-05-15 22:47

very good chance-she chewed on one the day before, but this was 2 hours after her morning walk

The vet was pretty adamant-a snake or poison and she would have been shaking, vomitting and in some distress.

She was deadset just laying out in the sun with her head between her front legs

Sorry to hear that

Thu, 2014-05-15 22:05

Dad lost his last year to suspected puffer fish.

He loved to throw them around...

That was very quick with no signs too and if you had taken her down the beach.

Vet said that was pretty common too

Dont dwell on what it was as you cant bring him back.

Go out straight away and get a new four legged family member asap.

Best cure for whats ailing your heart at the moment.

Doesn't mean you loved him any less...

Kills me every time I lose a pooch but cant imagine life without one by my side.

Really sorry to hear about your dog Rob

Fri, 2014-05-16 07:02

Same happened to me two weeks ago tomorrow....came back from a day squidding on boat with kids , wife away in melb for study,he was fine and normal hanging out to get some squid guts and a play but didnt get any as we were going to clean next day for a feed.Laid down in his spot in house fine but did smell bad and told him we needed to give him a bath before mum comes home and he got excited. Half an hour later heard a couple of wheezes at 730pm and stopped breathing, bolt to vet and spent $750 trying to revive him, there was nothing they could do he passed on drive there.9pm eldest son and I burying him in hisfavourite   spot under the tree..Shattered...didnt sleep saturday night bawling eyes out for three days ,dreading to tell youngets son who fell alseep after day on boat and then my wife when i had to pick her up from airport....only 7 but brilliant little bugger.House , family and friends all shattered...Mate do yourself a favour and remember her for all the happiness she bought to you and get another one like Straith said. I took today off as we did get one, sort of happened out of the blue but the house is a much happier place...apart from toilet training.

RIP Buddy...you were a part of the family and always will be.

So sorry to here Rob

I have 3 urns with my old mates that past over well into their 15th years.  When my last little rat bag (Yorkie) passed over at the age of 14yrs Bob and I swore no more fur babies as it hurts way to much to put them down when suffering.  But last year we got  Elvis  the man from the Geraldton dog rescue and now that Bob has gone he is a god sent, keeps me company and of course my cat that adopted me. I agree go get another fur baby as soon as you feel its right.  When they go over the rainbow bridge they certainly leave a big hole in your heart.

I think when you have children, fur babies in their lives growing up makes them responsible at a early age, learn how to look after them, respect, responsibility at a early age, even the poop patrol becomes a job they will except hahahah

Sorry to hear mate, I'm with Scano, could he have picked something up at the beach, even a blue bottle?

The little Fury rats sure know how to find a place in your heart. Something about those sloppy tounges and wagging tail every time you walk through the door that gives you a smile.

Just been through it Rob

Fri, 2014-05-16 10:16

Our 13yo boy was well at home, then started shivering and vomitting. Rushed to the vet as we have been trough snake bite twice before (ouch $$$ for antivenom) and luckily the 2 pupps survived. This again was a suspected snake bite. Got admitted to doggy hospital and received the shots etc. Made a recovery and we thought phew, dodged another bullet. But the vet wasnt happy with something and ordered and Ultrasound. F%$K!!! Nasty liver Cancer.

4 off us in tears driving home to contemplate what next. Decision made and back to the vet. Cant let your best mate suffer. FN hardest thing I have ever done putting him down as all other pups we have had died naturally at home.

But just as Straith and other said the memories remain, and we have a new, mad as hell and loved to death pup. Got her about a month after and now 5months old. The brightness and LAUGHTER at dogs in the house has returned. But Boss wont be forgotten.

Lousy thing to happen,

Fri, 2014-05-16 12:35

Lousy thing to happen, especially when you dont know why. We have a Bichon 15 yo and I think this might be his last winter. We have brought in another pup, a West Highland to keep him company. He's about 30cm high at the shoulder with a big heart and absolutely fearless. He's chased two lots of burglars from our home. It will be a sad day when he passes as the whole family has grown up with him.

Boss was a Bichon Frize

Fri, 2014-05-16 13:38

The 2 pups bitten was the 2 Bichon's, their names were Bichon and Freezha (go figure what kids call dogs), but because the boy was so fearless his nickname grew into Boss. His daughter is the other Bichon we have and she is approaching 12, so after what happened to her dad we are a little concerned. How tough these tiny dogs are when they were bitten by the dugite was amazing. All 5ft off dugite lying dead and headless, with numerous punctures, and the pups getting sick is the certain alert snake bite!!

The poor bitch was bleeding from every hole and took $3000 worth of antivenom to save her. Between the 2 off them spent $5K. That shows you how much dogs are part off the family. We didnt care.

On a fishing site I could have bought 5 Stella's for that 2 days!!

Heart goes out to you and the family- memories will be there constantly, crazy little turds become part of the furniture really quick and its hard to let go!

My old boy Nevil (12 year old Boxer) is getting to that stage and I dread it every time i have to fly away to work- I just hope he hangs in a little longer for one more cast yet.

yeah that is a hard one, my swings are 4 weeks or 5 on/off so the older mutts you just never know. But ours have always been so robust that its been our decision.

At the end of the day though, its not one of the kids and life goes on.

But I do think about her sitting at my feet looking for a scrap while I was cooking an early dinner-45 min later, "where is she, always right behind the big dog?"- gone while stretched out in the sun.
