Blowholes at Quobba - May 2013

So I am heading up to the Blowholes near Quobba (24 29.646s 113 24.024e) next May.  Never been there before.  What do I need to know?

Weather conditions?

Facilities - Long drop dunnies and nothing else?  Bring in your own everything!

Does the ranger take the rubbish away?

Launching? - 4WD beach launching / retrieving, how protected is it?  Can you leave a boat on a three anchor mooring (one on the beach, two in the water with pulley rope in between), or is it launch and retrieve every day?

And the fishing?  predominately trolling for maccies.  What about tuna?  yellow fin?  The cliffs to the north look like good maccie grounds, and to the south south east outside the reefs?  pack a good supply of pink chromes, blue silver (sardine looking), and red heads?  and plenty of wire traces!

Bottom bouncing / jigging.  just look for ground while we're trolling or out deeper, 50m+ ???  Cods, emporers, baldies , snapper (? or too far north?)  what else will we find on the bottom?

Any local knowledge or input from those that have been before welcome, and not just about the fishing either, facilities, fuel supplies on the way up from perth, bait supplies, etc etc.

Thanks in advance.

Blows

There is space to moor a small boat in close to the beach behind the reef if the swell doesn't get too big.

There are skip bins located next to the road coming in for your rubbish and I'm not sure how often they are emptied.

The "ranger"is usually one of the seagulls who come up from down south every year and takes the fees from those camping or stopping over. There are new long drop dunnies with some chemical one on the drawing board for the near future.

For fish, mackies, tuna are well and truly about for trolling, for bottom stuff, try Darwin and Fitzroy reefs, Beejarling shoals to the south west or head up toward Cuvier where there is some good bottom straight out. Its about 8nm shorter to travel over to the islands from the Blows than from Carnarvon and that time of the year is just short of the snapper schooling seson but there are still heaps around.

Most of the bottom out front of the cliffs only extends out about 100-200 metres then turns to sand is something to keep in mind.

April, May, June are probably the best months for the Carnarvon regions for good boating weather.

Hope this clears up some of your questions.

Thanks heaps, interesting what you say about the sandt bottom.  the charts look a bit barren in front of the cliffs!
