Blue Sky Mining -Peter Garret
Hi, My I'm Gaz958 based in margaret river. Joined a couple of weeks ago and have really enjoyed the site. Been watching until now and enjoying all the posts, but after watching the local news(GWN) I just needed to vent my fury at our Federal Minister for the Env. who has decided to apply for World Heritage Listing for the Ningaloo Reef. He flew into Ex. and Carnarvon for public discussion but despite promising public would be permitted to attend (on tape to GWN and played tonight) he denied their permision to attend and delayed to public forum which he will not be attending(?) next week.
I have no pol. axe to grind but I have been going to EX and C. Bay for the last 40 years (yeh I kid u not). I know a lot of locals and have watched people like Bernie and Sandra (Mahi Mahi - Coral Bay Ocean Gamefishing Safaris) Doug Hunt and others invest a massive effort in developing, promoting and PROTECTING the region. If it wasnt for their efforts we wouldnt realise the enormity of the asset and a great many people wouldnt have had the opportunity to exp. the wonder of the Ning.
In my view elected members are beholden to communicate directly with the electorate when they want to change their living conditions, anything else is cowardly and is using the remoteness of the region and the minimal poulation as an in ur face disrespect.
Damn its apity we need politicians!

Yep
Hi Gaz,
Just watched it on GWN as well and as a Exmouth local I'm not happy. As the chamber of commerce said, he's already made up his mind and I'm pretty sure we can guess what the results are going to be!
How national heritage impacts on fishing I'm not sure yet, but I can only guess its not going to be good! I'm a strong advocate for reducing bag limits up here to 4 fish per person because I'd prefer to take short term immediate pain rather than face what the Perthies are soon to go through.
Sure we have a magical unique eco-system up here that needs protection, which it already has got to some degree. I just hope it doesn't take it too far and it becomes completely look but don't touch. :(
Cheers,
Adam

I agree Allan, yes reduce bag limit, we give these so called policticans the license to act on our behalf but sometimes I really wonder or whats their real agenda the $ might dollar????

Poorly Handled
As reported, he appears to have flown in and not consulted with locals despite promises he would, then said there would be a public meeting this friday but he won't be here.
Hey may have burnt midnight oil, but not on this issue

You can rest assured that if they let Garret at it, they think its pretty safe bet, he is pretty low on credibility these days.
I don't really get why people react so poorly to pro-conservation agenda, perhaps if we had one down here, the V5 regs would never have happened?

I think its the
I think its the implementation not the goals people have problems with.
I.e. I'd guess people here would be for it, unless it meant they couldnt fish it. (but reduced bag limits, better education and awareness, more funding, or more studies, etc would be fine).

Peter Garret is a real worry
He looks to have cost Western Australia tens of billions of dollars in new investment and thousands of new jobs by deciding, without any discussion, that all LNG projects should be developed in one place in the Kimberley.
The companies looking at LNG developments in that area had spent hundreds of millions of dollars undertaking the Federal environmental approval process on tghe sites they had selected and he just decided to come along and change everyrthing without any warning.
One international company is now on the point of deciding to take its project to Darwin.

Don't believe all you read Roberta
The Jap company has been operating there for nearly 10 years so I don't see what PerthNow thinks is different now. I know that the whale nursery in that area is considered to be extremely healthy.

Welcome
to the loony left - this is the shuddering jerk Australia voted for - he has another 3 years plus to pull these stunts. Imagine if he was half as good as everyone thought he was - you would need a visa to cross state borders.

The worrying thing is he just makes decisions on the fly
Even his fellow Ministers don't know what he is doing. He has already embarrassed a few of his Federal counterparts.

I think Federal Labor are aware of what a liability Garret is so I seriously doubt he is allowed to have any ideas of his own. Look how they gave Penny Wong climate change?

I'd say be careful on the sea levels though, they might come as a job lot. I guess anything that gets the beach closer to Mt Barker is good though?

LMAO Till - 120m!
Actually wasn't considering that, but now that you mentioned it. I've just checked my car (it has a digital altometer/temp/compass in the roof console) - we're 120 meters above sea level - hmmm might upset a few localities me thinks

I am not sure what is happening here
I am on Peter Garret's official media notification list and I have received nothing about his Ningaloo decision. Double checked his website and there is nothing there either.
