Engine Number location

According to my book there should be a plate riveted to the transom bracket on the left hand side, the number should also be stamped on a welch plug on the top of the motor, but the manual does say that the position of these may vary between models. If you think it is between 1980-1990 and have the model code I can tell you the year it was made.

Jesus that looks like the motor off my old man's old boat we had in the late 70's. I remember he had to get the heads replaced due to corrosion. It never failed though. What are you doing with it? rebuild?

It was on a boat I am rebuilding. Not sure what I'm doing with the motor yet, depends on costs. Got it started without any problems but it was abit rough. Going to get it serviced and see how it goes. Hopefully won't need a rebuild on the motor. Want to make sure the boat floats before I spend too much.

those johnos are the outboard that nearly put mercury out of business (and made mercury lift their game) due to their reliability

I'll make a new post for the boat rebuild.

Awesome, heard it's actually a good old motor. Can't beat old school!

Don't see many from the 70's

Don't see many from the 70's anymore. As above they were a good solid motor in heir time but if needing too much TLC I wouldn't be spending too much on it - resale would be low and would be better off getting a later model for the dosh.
Used to have two seahorses myself on different boats (going back a while)

It will like to eat plenty of fuel as well!!
