Boat Lights

Hi Guys, after some advice from those that have been there & done that. Time to upgrade the tinny (5m Ally Runabout) with some lights to hit the sound when things warm up. I remember seeing "Boatlightfishing" come on board as a sponsor, but now they are Korr Lighting, and no longer a sponsor? Anyone used these, are they as good as they say? Was planning on using these for decklights, will I need the 4m kit or 8m? Also need to sort out nav lights and wanted to go LED again for the low power draw. The boat already has side marker lights, but I think they were wired by a mad woman with PMS! Gonna start fresh, and will add masthead and hopefully a LED spot for the front, again any suggestions?

Cheers,

Browndog.

Good to see we are all in agreement hah!

Seriously, that just makes it harder, one saying go for it, other saying they are junk! Scottnofish did you try to get warranty on them or anything? Any response, or did they run a mile?

You can buy direct from the store or even better they sell on ebay and i tend to find you get better deals on them. All mine have worked 100% 2 years down the track), had one of the LED spots stuff up (it dropped a few LEDS)and they exchanged happily no dramas.

Have decked out boat, 4wd/trailer and also quad bike .

Click on the work lamps link on the site I put up

Theres a boat decked out already with some suggestions.

I got two of the BL181WM lamps and they face backwards onto deck. Thay arent spots, they are floods and work great. Also strip lighting under gunnels (waterproof strips that come in the pack of 2 about 50cm long) and some smaller general lights that are fixed in cabin. All depends on how uch lighting you want .

I have a one metre strip

Mon, 2012-08-20 09:05

I have a one metre strip under the gunnel on each side, Led cabin light and going to upgrade the Nav lights to LED eventually.  I find this is plenty of light only other thing would maybe be a LED deck light as per Happy Hooker but the strips under the gunnels are pretty good for general use and as mentioned don't shine direct in your eyes which helps to keep your night vision intact.

Cheers

I used 6m strips from this

Tue, 2012-08-21 13:10

I used 6m strips from this ebay seller:

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/2-X-12V-6-METRE-LED-BOAT-FISHING-LIGHTS-CARAVAN-CAMPING-WHITE-LED-LIGHTS-STRIPS-/160865789352?pt=AU_Boat_Parts_Accessories&hash=item25745925a8

Each of the LED's is sealed so no water ingress is possible. I used a 6m strip under each gunnel, and made sure that they extended inside the hatches under the seats. This means that at night, when the hatch doors are opened, the insides are well lit and no torch is neccessary. Each LED has sticky back adhesive to hold in position, and then I also used silastic to ensure no movement. Installation was easy, and I've had no problems at all with them.

Night vision is excellent as shown by the following photo:

Cheers.

OK, sounds like the strip lights under the gunnels are the go, now what about spotlights? Googling Marine LED Spot light gives a pretty ordinary search result, and I looked at a few shops today selling junk that wouldn't last a month. Was thinking the Hella "Sea Hawk" spot light like these : http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Hella-Marine-Sea-Hawk-LED-Floodlight-Spot-Spread-White-Red-/180956175450?pt=AU_Boat_Parts_Accessories&hash=item2a21d41c5a

Anybody used these?

I have functioning side marker lights (incandescent globes, but they work fine so will leave for now) so that just leaves the masthead light which I'll get one of the LED pole mounted units.

Browny I don't suppose they throw in the fish with the strip lights?

Thanks all for the advice.

Wed, 2012-08-22 16:00

Yep my side nav lights are the older globe type as well but I'm just going to replace the mast head/anchor light to LED at this stage to lessen power draw whilst the motor is off.  Given the side nav lights are only on when the motors running I'm not to fussed re upgrading these but I'm sure I'll get to it one day.

Only other thing I was considering lighting wise (apart from maybe a deck light) was maybe a LED light bar on the bow as a spotty when underway on dark nights but at this stage maybe a bit over the top for me.

P.S. Hella are a pretty good product

Cheers

This is what I bought

Wed, 2012-08-22 19:07

OK, guys, placed an order today from Korr Lighting on the 4m LED strip kit like this:

http://korrlighting.com.au/boat-light-white-4m-4m-kit.html

And also ordered 2 of their LED spotlights like this:

http://korrlighting.com.au/10watt-led-spotlight.html

Hopefully I can mount these up high, off the canopy frame to see where I'm going. Probably not 100% ideal, but I thought the price looked pretty good vs a single Hella Sea Hawk at around $200. Once I test them, I'm hoping one will be enough light to see where I'm going and I can point the second over the side, maybe attract some squid or whatever. Anyway, I like the idea of two lights over one.

Will pop down the local shop (not a chain store for the BCF bashers, even though they are closer!) for a mast head light on a pole, then hopefully should be sorted.  Will let you know my thoughts once I get it all rigged, which might be a while due to work committments. (I know, I really need to sort my priorities out!)

BTW, does anyone know if Korr are still a Fishwrecked sponsor? They do ask on their website how you found them, and have Fishwrecked as an option (which I ticked)

Cheers,

OK guys, the installation is finished. I mounted the two spotlights up off the top of the windscreen, I am impressed with the compact size and quality of the mounting hardware. I also see they are now $10 cheaper each, Grrrrr!

Strip lights under the gunnels look the goods, along with a new switchboard/control panel, 12 volt cig lighter outlet (for a hand held spotty or whatever) and rewire of the boat. Can't believe that somebody wired up an aluminium boat using the hull as an earth? Amazed there is no electrolysis visible anywhere, but I have had a good look and all appears ok.

Anyway, I'm happy with the light the two spotlights throw out, now I just have to find the time for the real test out on the water. As an interesting point I met a mate of mine in Bunnings as I was doing that after work stop to buy some more cable and told him what I was doing. He is now importing LED lights and popped round with a heap of samples, I liked his 12W spotties, but they were a lot larger & heavier than the 10W units I have, but better light output. He is going to see what else his supplier has, if they come up with anything I'll let you know. It was cool to see what a $2,700.00 50 inch LED Lightbar does, not sure I could find somewhere to mount it, but you wouldn't need to take the fish home to fry them! Impressive!

The Test

Sun, 2012-09-16 20:11

Well conditions were a bit average Saturday evening, but I took the young bloke out with me to try the lights out. Very happy with the deck lights, they did a great job. A little dissapointed with the spotlights, they put out plenty of light, but it was a bit hard to see with all the light getting reflected back off the bow (painted white), and even the VHF aerial. Even though the bow was not in the direct "beam" of light, the reflection was enough to make it hard to see. I might have to re-think my mounting position, either higher up off the canopy frame, or all the way forward off the handrails (no chance of reflection, but that will be quite low)

Any suggestions?

Oh, and the fishing was pretty ordinary, but we were only out there for half an hour or so to check things, and the young bloke reckoned he was cold so we headed back. No keepers :(

I have also noted the

Wed, 2012-09-19 12:09

I have also noted the reflection off my bow being a problem when using a hand held spotty one of the reasons why I haven't rushed in to mounting a spot light on top the cabin.  Was thinking of putting one right up the front but don't do that much night fishing and think it would be more pain than worth due to just being in the way of anchoring etc, also what I have done has only involved reasonably short distances of travel (at night anyway), so have just come in a little slower without the spotty.  Have found once your eyes adjust on most nights you can see quite well.  The problem with spottys fixed or handheld is you only see whats in the light and may miss a boat approaching from the side etc.

Mounting it off the rail will work however due to being under your eye height you will get a small shadow area behind the waves (if that makes sense??).  My Bow rail is around my eye level but I want to keep this obstruction free (sometimes pull the cray pot and tie it to the top of the bow rail to get it out of the way rather than having it in the fishing space and annoying me)

Cheers

Paul
