Boat parking on Verge

Over the weekend a council worker came round and dropped off a community safety notice about the boat being parked on the side of the house (Nature strip).....great!

We have a corner block, so sits on the side of the house and doesn't obstruct any corners etc.

Anyone know if there is a way to get a permit to park boats / trailers in such locations? Have checked out the council website which states

Verge Parking
There are various locations throughout the City, where verge parking is prohibited by signs.

Under the City's Local Laws, it's an offence to park on these verges and you might receive an infringement notice. In other areas, you can only park on a verge if you have the permission of the adjacent property owners or occupiers.

However the peanut I spoke to on the phone from the council said he thought this only applies to cars, not boats, caravans etc.

Cheers
Bodie

I had the same issue, also with a corner block. Was only allowed to park the boat there for 24hrs or an infringement, but was ok if it was hooked up to the car. mine was city of gosnells, never actually got a fine though, other councils may be different though

Parking boats on verges

Mon, 2014-01-20 13:16

The regulations may well vary from council to council. I live in the Town of Vincent (TOV) and have an ongoing battle with them each time I park my boat on the verge. I don't have sufficient space within my boundaries to have my boat on my property permanently so the boat is kept in storage in Kewdale. When I decide to take the boat out (which is all too infrequent) I will park the boat on the verge generally a day or so before I go out and the boat will be returned to storage a day or so after the trip out. Within 48 hours of parking the boat on the verge, most times less I have the ranger from the TOV knocking on my door saying that the boat cannot be left on the verge unattached to a tow vehicle. We apparently have a serial complainer in the area and the rangers are quite candid in saying that generally they would not bother but if they receive a complaint they must act upon it.

The secret appears to be that the boat must be attached to a tow vehicle whilst on the verge. In my case there is simply not enough room on the verge to have the boat hooked up to a tow vehicle due to the presence of a large tree, a TOV tree, and let me tell you they are very protective of their trees. I have on more than one occasion 'offered' to remove this tree on their behalf. They have yet to accept this offer.

The TOV are happy for me to park the boat on the street, hooked up the a tow vehicle and reduce the street to one lane but it cannot be left on the verge unattached. In one of the many discussions I have had with the TOV I finally discovered it was possible to apply for a temporary permit to have the boat on the verge. There is no guarantee any application will meet with their approval but at least I know now that I can apply. Next time out will be the test.

Can't understand how some people have nothing better to do than call the council on such menial issues

If the person has a specific issue they could at least approach you first with their concerns before taking it further

I couldn't agree with you more. No balls. And it's made even easier for them by the fact that they can make complaints online and hide behind their anonymity.

Exactly Tradewind. Its too easy to be anonymous and cause heartache for minor issues, even when a simple discussion would more than likely sort any 'problems'. I would hate to see what would happen if the shire up here made us take our 'stuff' off the verge!

Troy, you still have your parked in the same location?

I cant find anything on the City of Swan website that actually states you cannot have a trailer parked on the verge only the phrase above with mention to gaining permission from the adjacent property...which is us anyway!

I saw an article in the community newspaper saying that the City Beach councillors/planning (I can’t remember exactly who decides) were also not happy with boats on verges OR in driveways as it detracts from the street scape.  I don’t know how boats can detract from the feel a coastal suburb?  I think they are keeping well with the “feel” of the area and I like looking at the boats in my area when I walk my dog.

It is only going to get more frustrating as block sizes get smaller, councils get stricter and boat storage in Perth gets rarer.
