Boat on the Rocks at Garden Island

I heard today (09-12-13) that they were attempting to retrieve a 6.8 meter vessel from the rocks on the western side of Garden island. I have no more details, anyone heard anything?

Don't think the Navy is that hard up..............yet

It is alleged that the vessel in question, intended gaining access close in to shore by transitting 'over' the reef. Hit the rocks.

Been there done that - bloody awful feeling

Ran too short an anchor line whilst diving out the back of GI years ago, wind turned from an Easterly (anchor was checked and hooked under a ledge with the wind holding it in place) and got up whilst we were down and the anchor simply dropped onto the sand and started walking across the sand - boat was a good 3-4 hundred metres away and moving when we surfaced , buddy donned his gear which I held and he swam after in on snorkel and was well and truly knackered by the time he reached it as the wind was getting stronger moving it away quicker.

From then on always used much more line than was really necessary but even then on the outside of FFB on a strong easterly, anchored and kitted up ready to roll over the side when the anchor line (12mm and very good condition) was cut clean as a whistle by something - even with the GPS marks we never found that anchor despite going back many times - we wanted both the anchor and to determine what was sharp enough to cut the rope so cleanly but never did find out

These things happen no matter how cautious you are - that is why they are called accidents !

If someone was in the boat as lookout and is recommended safe practise, you would of been right, if they also have a rst.
