boat trailor wheel bearings

Im towing the boat up north in a few weeks and want to get the bearings done on the trailor, Ive never done it since Ive had the boat. Can anyone advise me on where to take it to get done and about how much it would cost. I live in the Kwinana area.

Cheers

Simon

Wheel bearings

Sun, 2008-11-30 11:19

Simo,

Pretty easy to do them yourself. I do mine once a year. And still on the same set of bearings for six years doing alot of k's.

Just take the hub off, take out the bearings and completely clean all the old grease out using a parts washer. After you clean them inspect them and then clean the degreaser off by washing them in gear oil. Get yourself a bearing packer and a grease gun. Bearing packers about 10 bucks from Mal's or Super cheap. Then pack them with Mobil SHC220 synthetic grease. Reassemble making sure your back seal is good. Then you refit them don't over tighten them, they need a bit of play. Dont forget your split pin!

Dont get me or Paul G to do

Sun, 2008-11-30 12:41

Dont get me or Paul G to do it or you will need 2 sets of bearings to get it right lol.

After the first (wrong)  one done as it was late and we were so tired, the next one was easy, just follow instuctions and make sure things arent put in back to front lol

you should learn how to do them

Sun, 2008-11-30 17:20

Might be tough to "get them done" if they fail on you are 200km from the nearest town - just because you are replacing them doesn't mean they can't/won't fail. You need to be fairly self sufficient in said circumstances so that means having a spare set and knowing how to change them in the event you need to.

If you can't do them (which isn't hard) at least watch who ever does it, as huggy said if your stuck somewhere be nice to have some idea, buy an extra set and keep in your travel kit. At least if you have them and are stuck some one will know how to change them out.

good luck.

Sorry to remind you of that

Mon, 2008-12-01 03:58

Sorry to remind you of that one, we had a similar experience travelling to Leeman once but we didn't realise the wheel had come off until we stoped for something to eat at the Road House, while walking back to the boat and trailer after a feed noticed one of the wheels missing with the axl hanging there just above the pavement, SHIT!! out with the tools.

From my own

personal experience the bearing buddies will help with minimising breakdowns if used right , by pumping some grease in before you go you lesson the chance of any salt water entering the bearings causing failures , I've run them for 10 odd years and have never had a failure or had to replace a bearing because of apparent wear . A couple of mates have had failures with the oil filled hubs(dura hubs) when on long trips a seal fails you keep motoring on down the road unaware that you have lost the bearing lubrication only to pull up at the next servo and find youv'e got a wheel about to fall off and a damaged stub axle . Bugger . Stick with the Bearing Buddies IMO
