what are you going to do in "another house" in exmouth??

sit in it and get on line and look at pics of boats and fish others have bought and caught.

if you already have a house , then no question.

Since you said another house in Exmouth I`d be voting for the boat . . . you cant use two houses at once but a house and a boat makes sense . . . Nice looking rig that too

geez Jeffo the heart and the head are saying two very different things there.
Nice looking tub with a hell of an electronics suite but one word of warning- an old work boat of mine had a 200hp Yammy 2 stroke and it was SO thirsty. I used to cringe when I was filling it up, and I wasn't even paying the fuel bill. Personally the big 2 strokes like that are too expensive to run in my opinion, you'd be better getting something with a 4 stroke.

Easy solution, purchase the house, hire a boat when you are up there for the next few years, sell and make enough profit to both purchase another house and new boat. Wife and self will be happy with the result

Wed, 2010-11-10 21:57

are you looking at getting that boat from over in the states?? purchase price may be good, but have you worked out the freight?? with the strong aussie dollar now would be the best time to buy one from over there.

bit suss about the paint job too to be honest - the hull might be a bit weathered or damaged and they could have fixed it up and just given a nice spray or maybe even one of the graphics wraps to flash it up a bit too. just like any second hand surfboards with a nice spray are more than likely once snapped boards that have been reapaired....

And you would have to fork out a coupla grand for the trailer too - which would more than likely require some modifications to get it to comply with the aussie standards.

Big choice though hey - with the aussie dollar so strong the boat would be tempting, but with all the bank b.s. going on right now you might be able to snap up a good deal for a house in Exxy...

ok here it is. you own a house in perth and renting a house in exxy. you currently own the boat you have and you get out in amongst the good fish with it. if you spend 20k on a boat now , when the kids are older lets say 16 or 17 that boat (if still running)  wont be worth too much at all. If you buy a house in exxy in the same amount of time the house will have increased in value , hence you will be better off. imo it is a no brainer . go the house. wish i had bought a 2nd house when we had a chance. the boat can wait and then the deckies will be older and be able to help you launch / retrieve and pull anchor/sea anchor instead of you doing it all

Love the nickname Ads gave it, "Rainbow Princess" like Ads , not too sure I'd like to be seen in it for a while before the locals get new sunglasses.

Russ and a lot of the others have put out their thoughts and most are very convincing, its something you and Vic will need to sit down and toss about.

The comments on the engine being a 2 stroke are well founded, whether the dealer over there can organise fitting a new 4 stroke or continue looking for a similar boat with one already fitted.

Will give you a ring tomorrow.

Creates a Few Questions Really

Wed, 2010-11-10 22:45

What's the true cost, realistically & an Alternative?

Cost of boat straight up  - $20K

+

Replacement Motor(s) - 4 stroke ? - minus sale of 200hp fuel snorter - $20K

+

Shipping costs & tariff to land the vessel- $????? - lets say $10K

+

New trailer  - heavy duty (to carry that puppy) - $8k

+

Vehicle capable of towing rig that size( tow capacity - depends what you've got now?) Ford F250 ?????

Conservatively your not gonna get out of it for less than $60K even with the tow rig that you own already

SO CHECK THIS BABY OUT!!!!!

Thu, 2010-11-11 00:51

Just to give you some real world figures on that engine, my 20ft Southwind has what looks to be the same motor (97 Saltwater Series 2 200hp) and on my most recent run to the barges we did 60nm and used 102L. Did about 18 knots out, and 35 knots back.

Its the 35 knots back that hurts the fuel gauge Cammos Laughing is good fun though . .

Jeff to go from Bundegi to Peak and back we use 70 to 75 litres with a 300 Suzuki 4 stroke , about 50 to 55 nm travelled and motor idling holding us on the spot while we bottom fish all day. I`d seriously look at a 4 stroke or newer technology 2 stroke, theres plenty of 2nd hand boats around at the moment.

Cheers Ben

Thu, 2010-11-11 06:22

$20000 seems way to cheap to me. Be careful. Had a mate all keen on buying a boat from the US. It looked great in the photos online. Last minute he was convinced to get someone to check it out in the US. Lucky he did because it was a piece of crap. Very easy to hide faults in photos (photoshop). Get someone you can trust to check it out.

Go the boat though, lifes to short. I'm sure the boys will love a new boat. Maybe a few camping trips over at the islands.

You would be mad not to go the house way. Exxy is a fisho's dream to to have a house there would be awesome. Trade off as mentioned above is to invite wreckers to camp on your ground and go deckie, or in Exxy you only need a small boat to get among some good fish.

The house will certainly increase in price, and with the marina development competing for selling the price at the moment would be as good as it will get. Then with the equity in your properties you'll be able to afford a boat aswell.

But I also understand the statement life is short etc, and a person should have fun not just worry about $$$.

I still think its a no brainer for me.

well if your up for more gardening and painting etc , borrow more for renovations on the negative geared housing loan over a longer period and put the boat through on the same loan, rent the house and let some one else pay of your boat , save some more money when your not out fishing , pay off a lump sum on the loan and reduce the loan to a smaller house only loan, house prices should go up again soon and alls good

How about you spend 15g on the boat you have, a new trailer and a new motor and maybe some new carpet which will leave you a few months worth of work to catch up to getting a new house.  Not much point getting a new boat when the old girl just needs a few touch ups to make her gold again.

get the boat

I reckon get the boat while the Aussie dollar is so high. Opportunities like this do not happen every day.

Renting out the investment house in Perth makes more sense for taxation purposes.

Wait until the housing bubble bursts before buying in Exmouth.

It will happen. Just be patient. All over the world Australia is known to be one of the dearest places to buy a house & Exmouth would be one of the dearest country towns around.

Rising interest rates & the escalating affordability problem will be the nail in the coffin.

Get the boat. Enjoy yourself!!

honestly if I was in your shoes, thinking for the future for you both and your kids, buy the house in Exmouth, I agree with Adam do the old girl up, put a new motor on her.  You have a excellent opportunity to buy another home in Exxie, go for it, 5yrs time (not long when you are young) then the big sparklie new boat will be in the drive way.  But it is both your decision, we can only advice you both.  My tip think of the future, as I think you will make a killing buying a house in Exxie

went on the real estate site and typed in exmouth and noticed the houses are very dear most around $450,000 to $650,000.  I tell you what for what they want a 3x1 in Exmouth compared to Leeman/Jurien Bay, its cheaper to buy a house in Exxie.  as we are thinking of relocating to Jurien or Leeman, but at the moment we'd have to dip into the super and that is a no no, so we are still in Perth hahahah.
