Boaters stealing spots

This may have been asked on here before but last week had "heated discussion" with a f@#kwit who had come in from miles off shore in a decent 6.5mt+ boat and b-lined it for me while I was anchored only 1.5km offshore. I quickly explained to the missus what was about to go down as this happens almost every second trip I go out.
He came in quick, then started circling my boat from about 60m out and worked his way in looking for the ground I was sitting on.
Like us all we work hard to find good ground and there's nothing worse than scabs coming around steeling your hard earned spots.
My question is, is there any rules out there stopping people coming so close (I could of jumped onto his boat on his last rotation!)
I now write down boat numbers and get my camera out taking photos of the boat. Also thinking of putting up a divers flag too.
Any suggestions that hopefully don't involve jail time? haha.

Haha, yeah Sambo that was my next move. I'm trying to think how a "name and shame" photo board could go up somewhere. Maybe on FB or maybe on here as a photo thread? Dunno.
I just can't believe how many scabs are out there. Usually in way bigger boats than we are in.

Of late I've only been targeting whiting and have had boats drive past seeing me catch fish. Then for them to pull up 20m (no shit) from me and drop a line. Not exactly the hardest fish to catch but it goes to show it can happen anywhere.

Unfortunately very vulnerable to be pinged when the anchor is down. If I'm anchored and burlying on a Friday, Saturday or Sunday then I'll avoid my favourite spots, save them for mid week sessions. Lately I've just been trying a new spot each time, so many great spots on the 3mile that you will pull pinkies off with a good burley trail.

Yea there has been plenty of times I have been heading out to one of my marks and as I get closer I realize that someone else is already there.

From their perspective, I am making a B-line for "Their spot"!

For me, bugger someone is on my mark, oh well I will just head to another one. It's not "MY" spot anyway.

I wouldn't however circle the boat and get very close, just turn the wheel and head to the next mark.

There are a few people out there that just seem to have no friggen idea though.

Not always a bad thing, was gearing up for a dive once and a boat came straight for us. Was about to get hot and bothered about it when they asked if we wanted a dhuey. They'd caught a 15kg that "didn't" release so they offloaded a 9kg specimen to us.

Definitely gets the blood boiling when someone steals a well earnt spot though.

Be careful Derek, some people get pretty protective about spots. You may well find yourself pulling your own head out of your bot bot if you circled the wrong persons boat. I've never seen anyone circle boats though that's a bit extreme!

[this is about etiquette and manners not claiming a spot]

unfortunatly everyone is so full of their own selfish entitlement nowdays etiquette and common courtesy/sense has all gone to hell

once upon a time , it was a known courtesy if some one was there first then move on or give them plenty of space , if rock fishing, boating , marroning etc at least have a chat & ask them if they mind you sharing or fishing nearby

that rarely happens anymore people just push in & become aggressive far too often with the lame excuse you dont own it blah blah blah

Had a fair haul coming back

Thu, 2016-08-11 21:25

Had a fair haul coming back from peaceful one day, pulled up alongside a tinny just out from marina. Old bloke and his cook, He went off his lolly (didn't want his spot was just offering a fish being nice) It was actually quite funny. He shut up when I asked him if he wanted a couple of pinks! Threw fish in his boat and snapped his whiting rod in process (when fish hit the deck he must have had a rod laying down). He got angry again. I took off to ramp. Waited for him to come in and gave him $100 bucks for snapping his rod with fish.

i stay well clear of anyone since that expensive expierence.

Haha thanks for a good morning read! Some valid points though.
Yeah we were fishing in a pretty common drop off, and a couple of fellas drifted past within casting distance that doesn't bother me at all. Friendly waves were exchanged no dramas. But when scabs come in from the deep with well more capable boats than mine just to circle your spot 5 times to check your ground (not even a chat just eyes on the sounder) it fires me up.
If anyone thinks that's ok I'd be guessing they do the same thing as this fella. No respect.

...puts popcorn down briefly..

Fri, 2016-08-12 07:37

This "subject" has been done to death. I've done some long posts on it, but it all boils down to this. You find somewhere , maybe not very obvious, where you catch fish. No-one is anywhere around at the time, so you draw the utterly ridiculous conclusion that it new, undiscovered, unknown. You call it my new secret spot. You find someone else on it one day. MY SPOT, YOU'RE ON MY SPOT.  Bloke could very easily reply, no, it's my spot, I've been fishing it for years. Then another bloke turns up, you're both on my spot, I've been fishing it for decades. Fact is, it's probably on about a hundred different plotters. Get over it.

On the topic of people coming up to you to "ping" (I'm starting to hate that term), I remember a rant I first saw on this when I first looked into this forum. Someone had a real whine about a rich bastard in a flash boat coming up and pinging, spoiling his drift, etc. Turns out it was a highly respected FW member, and when he replied, his side of the story was very different. Ranter had to pull is head in , bigtime.

There is certainly an etiquette involved in this, but just remember the old saying, " believe nothing of what you hear, and only half of what you see" You see someone doing something, and put your own interpretation on the motive for his actions, and you can be WAY off the truth.

Thanks for the common sense comments Ranmar, Where I fish there aren't many others that get up that way but we do see others from time to time, if they are near or on ground I fish I just take off to another spot. We don't own the ocean, just give each other space boys unless invited to fish a line or drift. Too much agro out there.

On this topic, I'll take the kids out for a spot of fishing inshore at Hillarys and if I see a boat anchored up around Little Island also fishing for herring I'll generally park in their general vicinity 100-200m to make sure we are both attracting the fish to the same area but making sure that my berley trail heads their way rather than sitting in their trail. I have said it on here before

Fri, 2016-08-12 10:11

I have said it on here before but what happened to me off Dampier takes the cake for Pingers. Was fishing a good spot when a cat turned up and came closer to say Hi. He then commented "wow, some fish down there". I asked the deckie to film this, which she did and was pretty pissed off, even though the blokes on the cat seemed friendly.
Don't bash a spot to often, but 2 weeks later thought we would try it again as the winds were nice.
Law and behold the cats on the spot, and as we got closer he told us in no uncertain words to "F" off HIS spot".
Now that just got me ropable and I proceeded to recount the story and got close enough to show him the photos (language probably not for this site).
Threatened him with a few things including telling the story and posting his photo and video on here and FB. He finally apologised and up anchored. At least he realised he was a Prick.
However I don't own the spot so if another boat was on there I wouldn't have gone over, but because of the previous 2 weeks and him coming over to say hello, I thought I would do the same. Normally I just move on to another.

North wall rotto trench, used to be my spot - now there are always boats on it when I head out...(esp since price of diesel has come down!)

:-( bahahaha

so road rage has become common place, how long before we have "water rage", with social media and the fact that everyone has the ability to record events - will end badly for someone soon.
I find it pretty hard to get upset over something so trivial when I am doing something I love.

Fri, 2016-08-12 14:42

I believe in etiquette for both the boat, beach and the stones, if im gonna be fishing close (which is rare) It always pays to have a chat and maybe even ask if they don't mind,

mind, if someone does this to me I don't mind, often times you end up having a good chat and a laugh as we are all there for the same reasons.

It is very easy to become protective of a good producing spot especially in metro area but that's the way it is with the amount of people fishing these days.

a few meatheads amongst a good crowd is inevitable in all walks of life.

We dive lots and never put up a dive flag as it only encourages them. If we ever break down we will just put up the flag and I am sure we would have some knob swallower

with us in no time.

I mark all my spots with a big red crayon, so if you see one of them when your out and about, it's mine, so don't fish there.

Waterproof

Fri, 2016-08-12 19:06

Has to be waterproof crayon and put on from underneath otherwise it washes off.

Had a laugh years ago, finished pulling shark net in close off Sugarloaf and was steaming out towards the Yallingup lumps, spotted a couple of boats anchored on a lump that is marked on the charts and shifted course to say hello and see what they were catching. Got abused up hill and down dale for pinching their spot.
Big deal, when you don't even bother marking it when you have a couple of thousand better ones already in your GPS. Could have told them of a spot about 400 metres off that was 100 times better but didn't after getting a mouthful.

It may be a Perth thing,

It may be a Perth thing, look at some USA fishing videos or even IFISH episodes, people fish about 20m from each other, just because you're at the spot first doesn't mean they didn't have that mark too. Bit like the freeway with people getting pissed when you try to merge into "their" space lol

Ive never really had to much

Fri, 2016-08-12 22:14

Ive never really had to much drama with it, but this subject certainly brings em out of the woodwork.
Its not rules, or illegal but it is just plain old fashioned manners not to do something "just cos you can"
Like getting on an empty bus/train and sitting next to the only other person.

Now that would freak me out

Now that would freak me out if I was the only one the bus/train and someone came and sat next to me...there is however always the exceptions.

She could be very good looking and with great swim bladders

Nice love it! Yeah it was

Sat, 2016-08-13 17:03

Nice love it! Yeah it was never about being there first or how many other boats were fishing next to me it was the manner in which this fella did it. He wasn't there to be friendly, hand over fish or even fish next to me. Scabs

Its a big bloody ocean out there with endless fishing ground so I've never known why anyone would ever want to fish on top of another boat anyway??
