Boston Whaler / Ocean Whaler

Hi guys,

As may of you well know, I've been toying with the idea of getting rid of my Caribbean Reef Runner, and changing to a cat....

Question is...

How do the Ocean Whalers compare in the rough chop to a cat?

Would a whaler be a better all round option for up here in Carnarvon, and would it be capable of doing the 55kms roughly out to the islands or would you stick to the cat idea.. I was thinking of cats around 5.2m but the more I read about the whalers, on paper anyhow... they seem to be more than a capable vessel....  Is there enough room on the decks to roll out 2 swags?

I think it could do the job of the 2 boats I currently have... which means freeing up the room at home... It could do the job for the inshore stuff my 3.8m Whaler cat currently does... plus the offshore stuff.... maybe????

Is the 565 the largest size they make?? (or in equivalent other brands of similar whaler style boat)

Cheers

Ocean Whalers are a tri hull

Ocean Whalers are a tri hull design, very flat, great running with waves, but extremely hard ride into it. For example, my 540 trailcraft was better into chop than a neighbours Ocean Whaler.........with the waves, the Ocean Whaler was unbelievably good.

Not sure what the reference to Boston Whaler is? The old Boston Whalers had a cathedral tri hull design a bit like the Ocean Whalers, but they now have a totally different conventional deep vee design.

Have you looked at the hydrofields?

What are you really trying to accomplish? Seem to be chopping and changing a fair bit but not really getting what you are looking for.

You are exactly spot on there

You are exactly spot on there dodgy....  I cant seem to find the right boat for most of the conditions Im trying to cover...

I love the reef runner... but its the high sided model...which basically turns it into only a 2 person fishing boat... pain in the ass to get up the front to flick lures at tuna etc...

I grew up sailing cats.. so Im pretty partial to their stabilty and comfort riding in the chop... Ive loved the 2 Markham Whalers Ive had in the past....  just a bit small for out wide... Only had a 4m and now a 3.8m...

You might be right on the hydrofields though... and have seriously considered one.. although Ive never been in one..  Ugly as sin though!!!  ;-)

JohnF.. So you are saying the whalers are great in a following sea yeah??  Most of the time its good weather heading out.. (into the seas)  and then blows up and have a following sea coming home...

aaaaarrrrrghhhhhhhh....... decisions...

Also looking at a Wellcraft fisherman...  centrecab style...... hahahaha.. Maybe I should just go back to fishing of the rocks for a while!!!!!

Ocean whaler is closer to the old BW Montauk hull, not the newer Outrage and Dauntless.
