 Did you spool the line

Did you spool the line yourself or was it done at a store? If not spooled on tight enough it will peel off, as it will if it's over spooled. Poor quality braid will also contribute.

Same happened to me doing the same fishing. The casting and retrieving of light lures with braid under no tension on retrieval is the big factor I think. The braid comes onto the spool looser than what it would if you were fishing with a minnow which creates tension as you pull it through the water. I lost about 100m of braid just the other day, I've respooled with fireline, apparantely it doesn't get so many wind knots..

overspooling

strip off some line so  have about 1-2mm lip on the spool. if it is too full it gets loose after a bit of casting and then eventually big bundles come off the spool instead of flowing off normally, and thats what tangles up,

i have found that coated braid does that all the time. try and buy braid that is realy soft and if you kink it with your fingers and the line stays at a rite angle its probly going to be crap. the softer the better.

Every know again try a random

Every know again try a random long cast and bring back under pressure and see if that helps .. size of reel can make things worse too. bigger spools..Bigger loops coming of wrapping on a guide thus creating a tangle ... clean knots help .. some brands of braids I've had the leader knot will pick up the braid as your casting and create problems aswell ..

Beau is onto the cause of the issue - the slack line causes a loop and eventually the loop will pull off the reel before the line spooled above it (if that makes sense) causing a birds nest type knot.

As with everyone else has said have a cast once and a while and bring it back under load.

When you cast before you commence retrieveing your lures pick up the slack line and make sure the first couple wraps back on the reel are layed on tight.  Ill usually finch the line with my fingers creating tension and wind the slack line up. Since doping this i have not had an issue when casting 0.8g jigheads around.

If you have spole the reell yourself it may be that the line is not spooled on tight enough, braid needs to be spooled on tight. If this is the case head into your local and have them respool it

Common problem??

Tue, 2013-01-08 07:39

I think the dramas you are having are quite common and one that braid users have more than likely had at one time or another. When I started using braid my knots were starting by a loop being formed when flicking the bail arm over and the line crossing over the spool and getting caught on the drag knob. If you don't notice and wind in, your next cast will usually pick up on the loop when the line is peeling off and you next 20 minutes has been booked up!! Now when casting I check every time I flick the bail over to make sure it's all good. It gets too expensive otherwise!!

Cool

yep l will have to start holding the line between the fingers every now and then ( I do find it distracting to do that).........and might try some fireline next spool up........I think the  line level has reached a stage where it's all but stopped flaring..........but my casting distance has dropped

I use 4lb fireline exceed for light lures, never had a problem (except for tying leaders on, it's like threading a bloody needle)

I use 6 lb nanofil on my rarenium 1000 and throw light lures for trout in some very windy conditions arround harvey dam etc and have never had a tangle, but had had big problems with my 4000 and 6-8kg gear at exmouth a few months ago. tried sunline PE1.5 then PE2 and still got wind tangles yet when i used the van staal vm150 (about a 5000) with PE3 on my t curve 10-15kg i never had a problem. I think its a combination of a lot of things, spool diameter, first line guide size and placement as well as what has been mentioned already. Poor Line tension on your spool is a definate problem as well as the lines casting qualities.
