Bringing Squid onboard without getting inked

Reading Ben Derecki's post on the super squid had me thinking.

How do everyone bring a squid onboard.

I personaaly follow Ryan Thipthorp's idea that I saw on a FWA video/episode years back, where you bring the squid close beside the boat, grab it behind the head, point it at the water, and stirr it up with a couple of light squizes, then into a 10l bucket, and then transfer it to an ice slurry bucket.

I have done it this way for years, even prior to seeing the video, but I was still wondering how others keep the boat clean.

Cheers

Neels

I'm sure Ryan just copied Pete D's excellent setup. It's a 16l nappy bucket with the flap lid on the marlin board.

I find that they ink as soon

Mon, 2011-05-09 11:46

I find that they ink as soon as they hit something hard. We use a silicon net, then straight in the bucket, very rare that they ink while holding them. Landbased is the same thing, the second they touch the rocks they let it rip.

Always grab behind the head.

Mon, 2011-05-09 11:50

Always grab behind the head. They dont tend to squirt a lot of you do it right anyways. If you spike them (knife through their head is the easiest, but dont separate it) and dunk them in the water a few times in the net they expel most of their ink, plus they're dead when they go in the boat so they wont squirt anyways (though tend to leak in the esky still, hehe). I use a silicon/clear rubber net too. Gentle on fish, but lets the ink out (environets tend to trap it more)

What I tend to do is net them at the boat, then grab behind the head then drop into a bucket. The bucket is a collapsable one from BCF that has a mesh top. I leave it mostly closed then slip the squid into a slurry in the bucket. The squids never really pointing into the boat for anything other than a split second, and if they ink in the bucket, the mesh lid stops it going everywhere. Plus, the great thing about it is you can zip it up, dump all the inky water out then pop it in the esky (you can even keep the squid in there in the esky to keep them separate). Its seriously a great tool if you're catching squid or whiting. You could hang it off the back of the boat perhaps though.

Other than that: wet rag ready for any spills as they happen.

squid handling....

Mon, 2011-05-09 12:02

Incorrect till, Ryan's setup is completely opposite to Pete D

What Ryan does is if the freeboard is low then he leans over and grabs the squid by hand behind the eyes/face away/de hook/then put into SW ice slurry esky on boat.

If the freeboard is high then use a scale safe landing net (Shakespeare brand) with PVC sides & mesh and net the squid. De hook and then put into SW ice slurry esky on boat.

Excellent setup

If you give them a whack

Mon, 2011-05-09 12:05

If you give them a whack (karate chop) between the head and tube it kills them instantly.

Then remove the head and ink sack by running your fingers down the spine and gentle pulling out the head.

Was shown this by someone a while ago and it works a treat. Once head and ink sack are removed the tube can be thrown on ice.

Saves a lot of mess and is easy to do after a bit of practice.

The easiest way to take them out of the water is just to grab them behind the head and point away from your boat untill dead.

Is that from cleaning too

Mon, 2011-05-09 12:18

Is that from cleaning too many windows or using too much sorbolene.

Dave showed me the karate chop thing. Give it a go you might be supprised how well it works. Makes cleaning them easier as well.

You can also

Mon, 2011-05-09 12:26

You can also 'squeeze-dislocate'/ rip the head off. If you dont remove the ink sac they'll still ink up whatever you put them in even if headless of course. Though, every squidder should have a bucket :p (saves opening the esky each and every squid plus saves inking the esky)

I try to avoid inking the esky too much, but usually when I have the rings, theres still bits of black on it, not pristine white. Doesnt really matter though, still takes great!  So made actual squid ink linguine then?

If you rip the head off you

Mon, 2011-05-09 12:30

If you rip the head off you will break the ink sack as it is connected to the head.

Doesnt matter if they are dead or alive then ink will go everwhere.

simple as

Mon, 2011-05-09 12:53

hold them in the silicon/plasticy release net and dehook, open esky, squeeze between the head and mantle, throw straight into the ice slurry in my esky - lid down and its done. They will generally ink in the esky, but who cares its easy to clean.

Those soft release nets are the best thing since sliced bread - hooks just dont get caught in them like the old style rope nets and I find them better than the environets. Excellent for fish, not just squid - can't recommend them highly enough.

Havent realy bothered with a net

Mon, 2011-05-09 13:05

Freeboard is low enough to just grab them, but I havent killed them before. Might give this a go, because even in a nice ice slurry they do mess up the bucket. I never put them in the esky because off the mess they make, but I like the idea of stopping them from making ink.

And yes Brucesta, the last time we went out got about 20, kept 8 large ones, used the heads for bait, and they were getting up there in size.

Oh Neels

Mon, 2011-05-09 13:26

so often when I have one in the net, dehook it and flick the lure back out, I'll catch 2 or 3 very quickly (especially if I have a handline out just by itself) in the same general area - impossible to keep up without a net!

I find when I catch one, I will nearly always follow up with 2 or 3 from around that same spot as I drift - they tend to congregate in groups, so where there is one there are usually more.

Sounds like you are taking the slackers option catching them one at a time........LOL

I agree

Mon, 2011-05-09 13:39

They do school for sure. We always has 2 fishos at least. The Mrs and I. But I get the handling job. Rule 1: as soon as we see ink or squid on, the other wind up like mad, cast towards the ink/squid. The first one gets brought up, usually with another on, dehook and I grab the other rod, jill cast out and on she goes.

I also find a good idea to have one On next to the boat. Squid are smart and like to see what is up with Larry squid, I think they want to see what he/she has eaten. Then its just a matter of dangling a jig and you have a shot at the others.

Chaos is usually followed by some rest time, until the next school, and the whole episode is repeated.

Also I have found up here in Dampier that drifting is not as productive as anchoring up, with a long line out. If it gets quite, I merely pull up about 10m of anchor line, and for some reason squid come and see what this new thing in their areas is doing. Score more often than not using this technique.

We usually when squid is on up here go squidding, then keep the heads and small squid as bait/life bait. A tethered live squid with a snell is dynamite on anything up here.

Can anyone give me the maximum limit per fisher?

Mon, 2011-05-09 13:21

I can't seem to find it, and is there a maximum boat limit? We've been getting some good size in Karratha of late.

Thought it was, but wasn't sure. Managed to keep 30 good size last week, the conditions were just perfect.
