brown scum on ocean near rotto

hi, was out fishing at the FADs yesterday and came back via the west end....on the way back we passed through large areas of what looked like brown patches floating on the serface...any body know what it is...thoughts at this stage is coral spawn, kelp weed seeding or pollen blown out by the easterlies...there was heaps of it and was quite heavy around rotto...

cheers

Al

Brown algae ...i think was the consensus on a previous thread , or possibly people crapping themselves whilst swimming off rotto ...

 Over here in Far North

Sun, 2013-02-03 18:24

Over here in Far North Queensland we get the same although I can't confirm without a photo etc. This is actually a nitrogen fixing Cyanobacteria called Trichodesmium.

It is commonly confused with what has been mentioned above. Not saying that's what you saw but we get it over here s lot at this time of year too.
