Maybe not.

At 40 cm I doubt they were bull herring. Maybe juvenile salmon ( salmon trout) as they look similar but different.

cheers

Dale

Leeman has monster Hezza. Unlikely to crack the 40cm mark though.

I think he means...

...if you say something on here that others may not believe, expect a rather colourful response.

I have heard the odd whisper of 40cm herring here and there...would love to see a pic. A couple of years ago at Complete Angler in Rocko, there was a photo of a juvi salmon, claiming to be one of these monstrous herring...so even some of the "experts"...the shop staff...get fooled.

They can get big

Mon, 2014-05-05 07:38

They can get big, my biggest was 32cm and I checked that it had black tips on the tail, bigger eye and all the other stuff you need to check (to make sure it is a herring). max

and the Fishwrecked record is 34cm but that's a long way short of 40cm.

Wherever they get them I'd like to know

Salmon trout

Mon, 2014-05-05 08:32

Never in many years of pro net fishing have I seen a herring go 40cm let alone 35cm regularly so I think those who labelled them don't know the difference or are trying to pass salmon off as herring to get a better price because of salmons lower eating quality

big herring at salmon beach Windy Harbour

Mon, 2014-05-05 08:57

30 to 35cm great fighting. Have caught 28 to 29cm at Quinn's in Perth. But nothing like the down south versions. They are way more bully.

Nothing wrong with small salmon for eating neither. Just don't overcook the fillets and dry them out.

cheers,
