Bunbury spots? and newbie info

Hey guys,

I tried looking for a forum search button but the one at the top only seems to do a google search?

Anyway, I've just started fishing a few weeks ago. Last time i went out before that i was about 12 and dont think i did much other than reel fish in and give the rod to dad.

I was wondering where abouts near Bunbury people are going fishing? We have tried the rocks at the back beach, strathum/peppy beach, binningup and a few others.

I'm only just starting to read up about gutters and banks etc and reading the beach to find spots. My mate has been fishing for a while but i've come to the conclusion that he doesnt know how to read the surf since we snapped 4 rigs in 4 casts at the beach yesterday (very rocky).

Lastly, is there a site that explains more about fishing conditions like, low/high tide, time of day, wind direction, swell etc?

Any help or links to websites would be great. Maybe even some good spots nearby to go :)

Cheers

Alex

The search is powered by google but it still searches the Fishwrecked site, so still works.

Probably a bit difficult to read the conditions on new spots with this weather we are having down here axeten but Binningup would be a good spot IMO for some tailor & mulloway right now with everything so stirred up, also done well there in the past (long time ago now)

What are you guys coming across at the moment beach wise? There should be some good gutter formation with this swell & come Wednesday it's set for a pounding with 5m rolling through further south here in Dunsborough

Mainly little herring and whiting around the beaches.

I caught a decent tailor but my mate said they are not very nice so i threw it back, only to find out they are tasty fresh... Hence i'm now on here to talk to real fishermen :)

Looks like the wind will die down by the end of the week so i might head to Binningup with the four-bee and start looking for gutters and stuff. I need to learn what to look for since at the moment its just pick a spot and throw the line in.

just be careful driving along the beach at Binningup after a big swell. Can be very soft and have a few washouts.

Yep your right the weekend will start shaping up better & the mid week swell will certainly rip through the beaches. Now I am no beach fisho & there are some blokes on this site who will give you far better info. Buffalo Beach may be the way to go & I would adopt the same methods when I fish Wedge Is. for Tailor etc.

Look for the waves breaking and see if there is any darker water heading between them & the waves just stand up. With a bit of surf around I look for the mushroom cloud of sandy water behind the breakers and follow that in. Setup the berley trail with pellets, couple of cat food tins & some crushed mulies in a hessian bag, I ties this off to the rod spike with rope and have the bag just sitting in the wash so a slow trail heads out.

Bait cast some mulies around & also if you can set out a big rod with a whiting or herring on, should be a good session!

Hey mate,

Me and a good mate of mine fish around the Bunno area a bit. Buffalo is quite good and if you dont have a 4x4 there is a nice gutter in walking distance from the car park there. Had a few runs there and landed the odd ray and smaller mulloway. If you go to far to the right you will get reef/rocks. You can also head down to forrest beach to. pretty easy access. I personally havnt had much luck at larger things at Forrest but you can get endless herring whiting etc.

The cut, the harbour, flood gate. Or drive to Busso are other spots you can try.

Well i'm destined to not be a fisherman i think. Been out the last 3 days to buffalo/belvedere beach, the cut, flood gates, collie river and caught only 1 blowie.

Mate caught 3 tiny whiting today at the flood gates but that was it. Hopefully its just the conditions and not something wrong with me.

I'm going to head south i think and go real early and use berley. That way we can spend the day down there and wait for something big..... hopefully

Wish me luck

read the surf

mate gutters are where the waves break a bit further out then fade away to nothing as it gets deeper and reform on the shore where the sand becomes shallow again. if you see a darker spot were the waves really do weaken quickly its a nice deep gutter.

the best way to learn to read the surf is get out on your boogie board or surf board ( maybe in the summer ) and go catch a few waves around the place. you will figure out how where and why the waves break alot quicker and be able to read beach's like a pro.

Also maybe grab the snorkel out in the summer and go for a swim at your local beach's.

Everything seems to be dead at the moment.

Even the guys at the tackle shop said theres nothing around. I went for a drive along peppy beach today but its all full of seaweed from the swells and wind. Will have to wait a while for it to settle down again.

Your first name's not Kyle is it Wattsy?

the Cut, Bunbury

Sun, 2012-12-02 20:26

just came here to say where the Cut is. I was visiting Bunbury and everyone seems to mention the Cut, but I cudnt find any info where it is!

Its at the VERY end of Leschenault Drive, theres a toilet(dirty) there, a fishing platform and bench and also rocks to fish from. Theres also a nice secluded beach and we saw Dolphins there!

You come off Estuary Drive, and theres a security guard at the boom gate(which was open)..If closed I've heard the guard will open for you to go to the Cut.

Turn 1st right past the boom gate which is Leschenault drive. Then keep driving and once you cross over rail way tracks theres a turning right. The sign says Turkey Point Cut. Go RIGHT. Straight goes to the Alcoa factory.

Then its a windy road and just go to the very very end.

Good luck!
