Got it

Fri, 2011-09-16 12:28

Caught on wed morning a live squid and a 250 lb handline any less and they will bust you off pretty quick.Been busted off a few time on 250 lb and 300 lb handlines in the last few days  they are almost unstopable around the pylons .Not sure the weight but my guess would be around the 35 kg mark  it was bloody heavy to lift up on the jetty and needed 2 gaffs to bring it up.

I dunno... They weigh more

I dunno... They weigh more then they look. First sambo I've ever seen was 1.2m and weighed just under 26kg. I might not say 35 but I could believe close to 30 depending on how fat it was, that pic looks like the belly is pretty full too.

The pic does not do it justice it was not that long but it was a very fat healthy fish . I am 6'1 and it came up to the middle of my chest.

Jetty Sambo's

well done on the capture but I have never seen the point catching them at the jetty. Sure they go hard but 250lb handline is hardly sporting and they are poor eating at that size. Each to their own I guess.

And yeah, alot closer to 25kg than 35kg.

have you ever tried stopping

Fri, 2011-09-16 14:26

have you ever tried stopping 30kg gamefish in in tracks around structure using a heavy handline?......heart pounding stuff and not easy......

I used to do it in Weipa off the main jetty chasing big black jew.....150lb handlines were as heavy as I dared go.....anything heavier I couldn't break and was scared of getting dragged into the water....

I fish the Busso jetty

Fri, 2011-09-16 14:58

a few times over winter for Mulloway so I know what it's like.

The point I was making was about Sambo's. Like I said sure they go hard but there crap to eat at that size. I'd rather just leave them alone at the Busso jetty and target them from a boat by jigging, way more fun and rewarding and a great catch and release option.

Nice fish. Lucky it wasn't a snapper else ww3 would be about to go off.

If it was a Snapper I'd be frothing and down the jetty in a flash, only 5mins away

nice capture mate

he may not have a boat , in which case it'd certainly get the blood pumping.

1 out of 4 sambos is my

1 out of 4 sambos is my ratio when i was living down there. it is great fun but they are pretty bad on the plate. i released all of mine to fight another day and give another angler a good fight. 200lb handline is the best method, with a squashed trumpeter as bait
