Buying a Boat Interstate

Hi everyone

Have any of you experence in buying a boat interstate?

I want to put an offer on a beautiful cruiser on the Gold Coast (private seller).

Organising a survey, transport etc doesn't worry me.  My 2 main concerns are:

  • Agreeing a price over the phone, paying for the survey and then being gazumped.
  • How payment can take place to the confidence of both parties

Do you know a tried and tested method here?

Thanks

Tommo

Id say the easiest way is to just bite the bullet fly over there. On a boat of $40K (say) itll only cost a few hundred on jetstar plus the same for a couple of days hire car?

Yep take a redeye out of perth and then a red eye back from brisbane.  Hire car and only 1hr to the coast.

best insurance money you could spend and lets the buyer know your serious...

Better still you can sea trial as well.etc...

 even locally, a survey

even locally, a survey should be done prior to negotiations, if the seller wont agree to a survey, he is hiding something. if all is sweet the payment could prove awkward. fly there for handover as mentioned. ps i have no knowledge of buying an interstate boat, but have done a few cars, same but different

up to you to make a deal that satisfies you - maybe a deposit to hold the boat and sale subject to survey

definitely worth flying over though

It really comes down to width.

Mine was $11500 plus $5000 for escort as it was over 3.49 but that was about 7 years ago also from NSW.

Freight you really need to shop around.

I did the red eye flights to melbourne.  I did an initial sea trial flew home hagled two weeks later accepted arranged deposit for sale via bank after getting him to do up letter of offers and sale (outlining what I was buying radio life jackets etc etc) then arranged survey/engine check as per terms of sale when passed organised transport, was able to arrange seller to drive boat to transport yard I then flew over and met seller and transport agent handed over cash and then got the boat transport ready ie tie down straps etc etc.  I did hire car option each time and used FF points for the flights.

I actually found my transport on ebay cost $2900 to get 6.5m back from Melbourne.

The other big cost is a trailer boat on a trailer of reasonable size will actually put them over height as well.

$5000 for a 26' is very good.

I have also heard of a few guys bring boats by ship now as well. That was a good price and excellent service and with out all the diesel mess..Sorry though don't know with who..
