Calm before the storm......Thursday 23rd
With the weather gods being kind in the last three days i've mad the best of it. Had another nice day on the water yesterday with Pete D coming out. Pete's been crook but still found time to go fishing....i like his form!
We ended up with a few descent Dhufish (plenty small also), big bluespot flathead, pinks, KG's, BB etc
I've had a very good run lately and have caught and kept some nice dhufish so i decided to put this one back. Fish was caught on my driftbaiting baitcaster on a strip of sargy. Estimated weight 13kgs and had no barotrauma issues so back she went!
I initially did a simple release as she was full of life but after about 4 metres (the vis was awesome) she slowly came back up with only air in the stomach stopping the release. The 40oz release weight was used but struggled to get this fish down (cant weight for the 80oz) but the fish being healthy actually swam down and aided the "release weight" release!

You sure are having a good run Ryan
But you always seem to have a good run.
That would have been a lot of fun on the drifbaiting set-up.

Dream conditions....
...those conditions look very familiar; how good was that?
Nice snaps, although I swear that second one shows the fish looking dissapointed at being put back! ;)

Brags
As a newby and observer for some time I wonder about some of the brag shots. Perhaps we could all look at what we need for a feed, and release the rest to BREED. I would love to fish the way I have into the future. I personally dont like fish kill brag shots. I would rather fish again 2morrow for a feed than fill an esky 2day!

How old would
she be? Was told that on their scales they have like growth rings (like trees) and Bob caught one about 18kgs in Leeman, so got the old magnefying glass out counted the rings till they sort of mingled into one and she was to my amatuer eyes about 25yrs old, the scale was really big and some years (if true) she'd grown quite well.
Adam would this be true? Interested if not how do you guage their age?

Otoliths
They have otoliths in the back of their skulls and upon removal and analysis under a microscope you can obtain their age, ie with growth rings. Check out this video for more information.

Nice Fish
Great fish Ryan. Looks like a cracka day out on the water. I'm looken forward to getting back amongst it. I'm at the airport now, flying back to WA in little over an hour. I'll give you and Pete a call and arrange a time to have a couple of beers.
Scott.
Three days without it and I get a little jumpy

Release weights work
Good to see the release weight works even when the fish looks strong enough to get down
Nice fish by the way

Well Done
Great example you're setting there releasing these fish Ryan, hopefully that big Mama will create a lot more broods!
Congrats again,
Joe
The smaller the icebox you take, the bigger the fish will be.
