Camping down south
Submitted by johnjohnthedon on Wed, 2014-07-23 13:03
Hey guys!
Me n my mates are planning a camping trip down south but are unsure on where to go and where to stay!
We are hoping to be within 3.5 hours on perths CBD. Can you recommend any good locations or camping grounds?
Spectacular fishing isn't exactly nessesary as we are more into drinking beer and chillin than hauling in massive fish. But it'll be nice to catch a thing or two.
My friend told me its illegal to just pitch a tent and set up camp on the beach, is this true?
Any info on the subject is appreciated! Cheers in advance.

Give Banksia camp a crack
Give Banksia camp a crack just nw of walpole down mandalay beach road. Have a look on google earth fairly easy to get to and an awesome spot. There is even a large log cabin for anyone to use with a camp kitchen and bunks but you'll have to be lucky as its first in best dressed. If you roll up on a week day you'll have half a chance especially this time of year. Plenty of tent sites there too. Awesome beach there, very scenic with islands and deep water just off shore. Camp fees on entrance. Never been there and not caught a salmon or two
Home is where you leave your shit when you go fishing

If you pitch a tent on the
If you pitch a tent on the beach there is a chance that the ranger could come and give you a ticket or tell you to move on. You would have to check the local rules but in most cases they don't let you.
Check the DPAW website: http://parkstay.dpaw.wa.gov.au/camp-finder/index.php?task=maplist®ion=154&prefilter_region=Australias+South+West&Itemid=128 The campsites are generally in the bush with no facilities apart from a long drop toilet, but you usually have a bit of space to yourselves.
Belvidere beach north of Australind is a pretty good camp site near the beach. Also Point Road and Contos Field campsites south of Margaret River are both close to the beach.

mate I recon you should go to
mate I recon you should go to warren beach. you can camp along the track in the trees out of the wind and rain then when you want to go for a fish you have to tackle the mighty calcup hill. fishing, camping and 4wd all in one. some good spots to camp behind yagerup beach also. if you prefer you can camp directly on the beach however the weather might make it a bit uncomfortable.

Hamelin Bay
Good clean camp ground, Karridale pub just down the road. Beach is in walking distance with a boat ramp and a 4wd track about 200m north of Bushby road to get on the beach.
There's a fine line between fishing and just standing on the shore like an idiot.

Mate you sound keen on going
Mate you sound keen on going south but could be very cold and wet. . . Why not head north for somewhere like Sandy Cape . . just north of Jurien Bay. Good camping spots. . .some a little more secluded, which would be good for a couple of blokes on the woobla. Good beach, easy to access and maybe pick up some tailor or whiting. Everything you want in Jurien including a good pub to watch the footy. But if South is your go then Alexandra Bridge is brilliant. . . . And the bream are nuts.

Yep high probability it will
Yep high probability it will be cold and wet down this way... You could do plenty worse than Hamelin Bay or Warren Beach though! Both cracking spots IMO, Warren beach is a bit more remote and fairly good chance you'll have the campsite in amongst the trees to yourself this time of year. Hamelin is also nice though there will be more people, on the plus side the Karridale Taven normally does a bloody brilliant counter meal!

Hi Dunga
Always wondered about trying the track to the beach just North of Hamelin Bay, is it not too bad or liable to get stuck? Cheers

Beach Access
The gate to the beach is for pros only, rec fishers have to take the track by Bushby road. Can't comment on its condition now but it used to be reasonable if you know how to drive a4x4 and have the tyres down.
White Point is another spot to consider, camp under peppermint trees about 100 metres off the beach
