Mate hooked a large model in Maylands the other day but the gill rakers cut through the leader   before landing. I dunno if they ever really left, as the fresh water is still flowing into the river atm

Canning Bridge and flats

Mon, 2011-09-05 16:29

Hey guys, just to let you know, the really big flatties never leave the river, they stay and spawn in the river.

My best of 82cm (yes thats right it had a shovel for a head and looked like a small shark) was caught right about this time of year about 3m from shore along the flats between Canning bridge and Mt Henry bridge. It was sitting under a tree branch in the shade waiting for schools of small fry to swim past and engulfing them when they do (whole schools of baby whitebait and other small fry was in its guts).

My bet is once there are a few more small fry in the river the flatties will heat up. Caught a bream at Canning Bridge around lunch yesterday on lure, another fishwrecked member was there he can vouch for me, it was milting so they havent finished spawning yet, meaning more small fry are on the way and flatties are on the way soon.

As for actual flatties caught so far this winter I get a great 0. Dont listen to me I cant catch flatties.

Ha.

Because 'fry' aren't necessarily baby fish. It's just an american term for small bait fish.
