Can't get full Throttle

Gday Fellas

Got another problem that I'm sure one of you will know the answer to!!

Was out on the water yesterday had no dramas til I was about 20kms out and the engine

started to struggle!! I immediately thought it was bad fuel and inspected the water trap filter that

runs between fuel tank and engine and the bottom of it was full of shit!! I drained it connected back up and tried priming it but the primer wouldn't pump til it was hard!! Got it started and putted back in at 7 knots but yeah to me it's like there's a block in fuel line between primer and tank!!

Does this sound right??

Cheers Didz

 Sounds like it's struggling

Sounds like it's struggling for air. I'd be giving the whole lot a flush and tank inspection too.

 could easily be blocked, but

Wed, 2014-04-09 12:40

could easily be blocked, but also the primer bulbs are very prone to failure with the valves in each end failing.

A cheap spare to carry but at a pinch you can do the following if its just the bulb.

1/ Kink the fuel line before the tank, squeeze the bulb.

2/ kink it after the bulb and release

3/ keep doing that to get fuel up.

This will get fuel moving up the line and has saved me in the past, most boats with built in tanks are much lower than the engine so need a fair but to get the fuel up.

You can also remove the bulb and blow back into the tank to move a blockage but still needs cleaning out.

But regardless Id do what Seakem suggests either way.

if your Trailcraft is a few

Wed, 2014-04-09 13:06

if your Trailcraft is a few years old look closely at the rivets holding the fuel tank cover (soft patch) on.

Mine would gather rainwater and eventually found the rivets were failing.

The rivets are quite heavy duty so if you remove you'll probably need more than the average pop rivet gun to refit it, I used a concertina one.

have you checked fuel filter

Wed, 2014-04-09 13:44

if you had shit in the fuel, it will get sucked thru and clog the filter up

for the price, i would chuck a new one in and try that first

Mine was a blocked carby jet

Wed, 2014-04-09 13:31

Had a Yamaha o/board that used to do this occasionaly. It would rev no probs in neutral, but when in gear would only go to "limp mode". Turned out to be a blocked carby jet. That's what it sounds like to me anyway.

 Trailcraft is the main clue

Wed, 2014-04-09 16:15

Trailcraft is the main clue here I think. The older trailcrafts used the quicksilver fuel line that had massive problems with the material breaking down and blocking the fuel lines. The internals of the fuel line turns to mush and causes all kinds of trouble.

Process of elimination

Wed, 2014-04-09 19:56

I had same problem with my 70hp johno, changed filters, lines, fuel, checked electrics in the end the carbi got striped down to find a blockage. The culprit was some rubber from old fuel lines which we replaced anyway. Your problem could be anything, it Will be a process of elimination, hopefully it the first few things that get checked.

Just take it to a mechanic, your times probably not worth the effort.

if you located near mandurah go see Mark down at the Portbouvard marina.
