Carnarvon's new boat ramp stuff up
Went to what was supposed to be a closed meeting last week to discuss Carnarvon's new boat ramp and what changes need to be made due to major stuff ups in the designing of it. Word had got out about the meeting and a fair crowd of locals turned up to say their piece on the project.
The height of the new jetties are 300mm lower than the original one in the boat harbour [see pics] and at high tide will be under water!!! [note--NOT just at spring tides,] like the old one.
At full tide the buffers are only about a foot or two out of the water , just the right height to damage the under sides of rubbing strips etc .
The bitumen work is expected to start in approx a fortnight and toilets and a cleaning station to be added once this is finished.
Questions were asked why it wasn't stepped like Bundegi ramp or floating like Onlslow? and Kalbarri . The answer was that higher tides in floods/ cyclones would cause major damage, WOTF, Kalbarri gets a big flood and no damage to there jetty and Onlow gets cyclones on a regular basis so why not here.
Suggestions were presented to change to decking levels to create a step down effect to allow for differing tide levels but we were told that there is going to be a 12 month period of gathering info so funds can be made available to do the changes, in other words, shut up and this is all you are going to get!!

Boat Ramps
Hi carnarvonite,
I live and work in Kalbarri and use the boat ramps regularly, the floating jstty works exceptionaly well, we did not have any structural issues with the ramp during the floods, only some erosion on the banks and sand build up under and around the area, that was sorted when the dredge cleared the entrance. If the floating ramp is installed and secured correctly they are great, we will be installing another bigger boat launching area down near the marina in the very near future with ablutions, fish cleaning facilities, boat washing facilities, etc, this ramp will again be a floating ramp. There is no damage to the side of boats and they are always at the correct height. Easier for swimmers etc to get onto or for fisherman if they happen to fall in etc. They are the only sensible way to install a boat ramp with the tidal movement that you experience up there.
Sounds to me like somebody stuffed up and does not want to admit it.

Totally agree
with you there Old Banga. The floating jetty at Kalbarri is great. A second one would be even better and i'm sure will be a great help during the busy times.
Really disappointing to see what's happened at Carnarvon, seems like a big waste of $ to me

cleaning tables
Floaters seem to be the go for sure up that way with the big tides. Just on another point, would be nice to see some cleaning tables at our metro ramps, about the only thing wrong with O/Reef ramp

Meeting
At the meeting it was asked if there was ever a meeting like that held after the completion of other boat ramp, "no" was the answer. There must be something very wrong with the design if the turn out was anything to go by.
Thats the trouble when no local knowledge is sought before planning these things by some wanker sitting behind a desk in down town Perth and they had the cheek to say the original ramp was put in so the barges used for the construction of the "T"jetty [and that was built 1.6 metres too high then} when one one the long time locals worked on both projects and tried to blame the high tides on the La Nina event.
Actually felt sorry for the two blokes sent up to face the crowd, .

No thought
The floating option is a good one. Cyclones/storm surge dont pose a threat to them as when a cyclone is approaching they get removed on blue alert. At onslow the shire used to get a digger to pull them out for securing. easy fix.

Dredge
There will be a dredge arriving in May to do the channel and if the shire can come up with some dough, the mooring area for yachts.
DOT are putting channel markers in any time now so they will be welcomed by the yachties who get bogged on a regular basis.

Ask the people in Coral
Ask the people in Coral Bay what they think about the Boat Launching Facility up there. Another stuff up, only half finished, the pavers on the island are starting to sink, no toilets, no fresh water, no fillet table, they run out of money didnt they! When will they get it right. Apparantly they did ask the locals what they thought and wanted, but didnt listen to them!

Of course they
(the so called experts) wont listen to you or any of us, due to the fact we have local knowledge and years of experience living in a particular sea side town. None of us have university degrees so we know dittlie squart. Can't believe they aren't listen to local knowledge Carnarvonite, but unfortunately that is the norm, our tax dollars getting wasted due to government stuff ups or beaurotratic bungles
