We are a Arafura stockist and can order in anything from them. We also stock other brands of circle hooks including Mustad 14/0 which we use out there in the Super Deep.

PM us if we can help.

Why stainless

Tue, 2014-05-20 16:59

Seems ecologically irresponsible as, if you loose a fish, it will wear the hardware forever whereas mild steel are gone very quickly through corrosion

Why stainless you ask?

Tue, 2014-05-20 18:04

I like stainless steel hooks for both game fishing and deep drop. The reason I use them is because they are generally very sharp out of the box and don't need to be discarded after each excursion as do many of the chemically sharpened hooks. My experience with duratin hooks is that on most occasions you will need to sharpen it first and after you drag it around the ocean in a lure or soak it deep dropping by the end of the day it is blunt and the hook tip has rusted because you have removed the coating whilst sharpening it.
With respect to me being ecologically irresponsible you will find that stainless hooks are made of a low grade SS (304 I expect) and they will in fact rust. The next time your go to your local fishing store take a magnet. I bet you can't find a SS hook that isn't magnetic, further evidence that they will rust.

er.....all game hooks need to

Wed, 2014-05-21 09:40

er.....all game hooks need to be sharpened, if your not your hook up rates will never be as good as they can be....whether there S/S or not....... and every strike or run hooks should be checked for sharpness regardless. This years exxy trip we ran the jobus in our skirts which are not S/S.....and they went well with solid hook ups generally bar one day that nothing went our way.

Agree with Sunshine

Tue, 2014-05-20 20:41

Thoroughly agree with Sunshine, the amount of fish and sharks I've caught with jewellery hanging out of their mouths over the years would number in to the hundreds and the ones with stainless hooks were definitely in worse condition than the ones with what was left of non stainless hooks.

IMO the non stainless ones have a higher carbon content in them making them a lot stronger but also more able to rust a lot quicker, saving a few cents from buying stainless that won't leave rust marks in your tackle box doesn't count as an excuse in my book.

just re read. would number in the 100s?

Wed, 2014-05-21 11:58

i have never caught a fish or shark with any hooks in its mouth ,usually  if i hook a fish it comes on board ,IMO  all depends on what weight line one is fishing with or the amount of drag on the reel , dont have a problem admitting that most times i struggle to get half my quota at any given time i go out fishing .

Collection

Wed, 2014-05-21 15:05

At one stage we were collecting tuna circles from makos to hand to fisheries research at the rate of one hook in every second shark, one had 5 hooks in and around its gob, handed over about 50

sunshine !if it is socially irresponsble then  perhaps they should not be in the market place ,blame the manufacturer-government-suppliers- fisheries etc. facts they are for sale and people will use them ,please get on with life &  get off your soap box .

I agree to do something to

Wed, 2014-05-21 11:24

We all agree to do something to protect future fish

Everyone thinks about the future. no need to force beliefs on others though.
everyone likes to think they do something. If someone wants to use SS hooks it's pretty small stuff.

(no one does "everything.....to protect a species") if you did you wouldn't be out there putting Co2 into the atm trolling for sport....but we all do)

Circles!

Wed, 2014-05-21 11:31

Yep I use the Mustad 14/0 duratin hooks and thats what we use on our " custom super deep rigs " in my shop!

I sharpen all my non chemically sharpened hooks regardless and I can use that same super deep rig for many many trips and still sharp!

No offence intended

Have caught several dhuies in poor condition and discovered ss hooks embedded in their gut ........ Before then I would use pretty much any hook available, not any more, now use mild steel chem sharpened circles so that in 99 percent of cases fish can be released easily

Each to their own as far as I am concerned but did wonder if you had considered the impact ss can and does have
