Cockburn sound

Hi, I have a 5m Quintrex runabout, never been out in Cockburn sound, want to give it a try before the snapper closure, any hazards to look out for, and how do you reckon my boat will handle it? Me and missus getting on a bit now, so we have to be careful, any advice appreciated. :)

Cockburn is a very safe place in most weather, but avoid it in a steady northerly. 5m Quinny will handle it no worries, have a search for the coords to the d9. That's a well known snapper wreck and the coords are quite public.

Thanks mate but don't have a GPS only B/W sounder, and no epirb either, as been fishing in river and estuary, and only within 2 nautical miles out from freo, do have flares, 27mh marine radio and PFD for each of us.

I believe that the 2nm limit
I think that you will find that the 2nm limit that used to apply that allowed you to not need a EPIRB has been rescinded. I may stand being corrected but that's the impression I'm under.

well if I indeed need an epirb I will get one, but marine regulations still say 2 NM not needed, lets know if you know something different pls.

May pay to look into the
May pay to look into the safety regulations a bit harder and cover your own arse rather than "let us know if you know something different"

As far as I can see on DOT website, not needed within 2NM, was not trying to be a smartarse, just wondering if I had missed something and somebody knew different, don't worry I always cover my arse mate, and I will buy one tomorrow. cheers Mal.

Cockburn sound and EPIRBS
All boats must carry a compliant EPIRB if proceeding more than two nautical miles from the mainland shore or more than 400 metres from an island located more than two nautical miles from the mainland shore.
The above is a copy of a statement on the D O T site concerning EPIRBS. Iam not trying to be pragmatic about the situation just trying to help a fellow FW member not getting a hefty fine, how do I know they are hefty, I coped one in Cockburn sound some years back for having an out of life EPIRB on board (it was out of life by 3 weeks) fair cop I guess.

I pick my days, but when it suits I go all over the Sound in my dinghy, out between the islands also. I don't do D9, very few times I've gone past and nothing is showing up on the sounder.

One of the times I tried to fish the D9 you couldn't get within 100 yds of the place it was that packed with boats, if you had tried to anchor you would have put your anchor in the boat along side you everyone was that close to each other.

Now all good, bought an epirb
Now all good, bought an epirb today, also new flares, now I am set, just need some good bouating weather, and just out of interest where is the D9?

Just look for the armarda of boats.

Longitude east 115. 44. 16.2
Have fun, just be care full someone does't put their anchor in your boat LOL
