Looks Good

Thu, 2007-03-22 20:56

Looks like you have spent a bit of time planning the whole thing Andy. Bit of opportunity there for everyone.

Got some great prizes too.

So how many of these have you held? Looks like youve got the start of a full blown comp happening Andy. Must have taken a bit of organizing.

So where do we register expressions of interest for future events?

Sponsors

Thu, 2007-03-22 21:18

None of them are clients of mine. It all started last year when I approached Joondalup Compleat Angler for some vouchers that we were going to use as prizes (paid for from the entry fees). John Abbot (one of the owners there) said he would throw in some extra vouchers as he believed the guys would come back and spend a lot more than he was giving away in prizemoney. He was right, several guys spent up big after the comp so he was very keen to get onboard again this year.

As for the other sponsors we have loose associations with them in varying degrees and we just approached them with the story and what we were doing and they were all very happy to get involved. In fact I had to turn some sponsors away otherwise It was going to be too big.

Last year I wrote an article on the comp in FWA magazine and this year I will also do a big write-up for fishwrecked and possibly another mag story with (hopefully) heaps of good fish pics.

Getting Ian to collect the Dhuie frames and do some "onsite" dissecting was a massive bonus for the guys. Should be really interesting.

Cheers

Spread of prizes

Thu, 2007-03-22 21:28

Yes Tim, we wanted the prizes to be a good cross section as we have some big boats and some small boats and a few junior anglers. Its always more exciting if you have a genuine chance of winning something in such a comp.

As for registering interest in joining the comp I'm afraid that whilst the afterparty is being held at my place we have to be careful how big we let it get, so the three Coipasa resident fisho's only invite a couple of boats each, otherwise it gets to be bigger than ben hur. This is the second one we have run, last year we had 5 boats this year 10 boats. Basically the same guys just last year 5 pulled out due to other commitments.

Watch this space however as the concept is something Adam and I have been talking about for a while and would love to get a few more fiswrecked comps organised. Our challenge is the vast coastline that our membership spans, and trying to get it to be fair and equitable for all to enter is the biggest stumbling block, not to mention how proof of capture on a given day, is difficult to verify with an online comp of any sort. Any thoughts on how it could be mastered would be most welcomed.

Cheers

Would be good to have something happen South of the River to go with the Mindarie Invatational which by all accounts was a great success.

Only problem is you guys NOR seem to be spoilt by the size and number of fish you get;).

Got a few thoughts on comps Andy. Ill send you a PM.

Slightly better than average day out........but.......

Mon, 2007-03-26 10:27

Guess who's got a big smile on his face this morning?

I am too busy at work today to post any pics or results but let me just say 8 boats competed with about 18 anglers and the champion boat trophy is now sitting in my office along with a few other prizes.

A big thanks to Ian Keay from Fisheries who dissected the Dhuies caught on the day and I have some good footage of it all, which I will post as soon as I can.

No massive fish but some good quality ones in amongst them.

Big Big thankyou to our sponsors:

Unique Aquariums
Compleat Angler Joondalup
Retravision Joondalup
Bob Slight's Boat Schools
Perth Esky Hire
Oscar's Restaurant Currambine
Garden Glow Fuit & Veg (Cnr Wanneroo Rd & Joondalup Drive)

Results will be posted soon.

Cheers

Well done Andy Mac

Mon, 2007-03-26 11:50

The comp was a fantastic day and everybody had a lot of fun. Some, even caught some good fish. No prizes for guessing who won the majority of the categories.........Andy.

The points system seemed to work very well. I was a little disappointed Rass did not score any points as I am sure I would have won the comp otherwise. Weather was a little blowie early on and most crews stayed inside before heading out wide to chase the big fish. All agreed the entery fees and rules seemed fair, except they missed out the most important rule, one that the organisers of the event couldn't win any of the prizes:-)

The day ended with a weigh-in/BBQ/drinking & story telling session back at Andy's place. Chatting to the other crews made me feel a whole lot better about my lack of contribution to the teams fish/points tally. It gets depressing fishing with the "King of the Dhu's" all of the time, you start second guess you own ability:-)

In all honesty I am sure I speak for everybody, well done Andy it was a great comp. You did a fantastic job with the prize list and the whole day seemed to go off without a hitch, congratulations! Hopefully next year it will continue to grow.

Cheers
Rory
