collie river

Hi Sandies! I`ll be joining you in a few months all the way from sunny Victoria, & probably living around the Bunbury area. Would like to know what I can expect to catch in the Collie as far up as the bridge in Australind ( Paris Rd)?

Thanks deepwater. The real estate bloke seems pretty honest by telling me all the mullet are fished out & I would need a tinny to get up to the bream. He said Belvedere is good for whiting. Hope theyre KGs

I was told there was good fishing in the Collie River near Australind. Plenty of whiting, bream and some mulloway. Somewhere near the cnr of Barnes Rd I think.
All the best Colin Hay

Try the beaches north and south of bunno for mulla's in winter. Salmon start soon and they will be up and down the coast around bunbury. I used to fish the old jetty as a ked and catch herring and skippy. Dunno about the river's. Apparently they are fishing well for crab's now.
The capel river south of bunbury is a good spot for mulla's off the beach and tailor too.

Failing that jump in the car and go where the crowd's are and find a good rock around yallingup way.

Well fishos after all that

Tue, 2008-02-26 17:59

Well fishos after all that the bitch took the house off the market when we were ready to sign the docos!
Its maybe a blessing in disguise cause we are now buying at Capel instead & going by all your reports I am going to have fun with mullies, salmon, & taylor at the river mouth!
Just a couple of questions from a soonto be deserting Vicco , whats a MULIE?, & what kind of fish is a DHUEY?
In NSW our mullaway are called jewfish so its a bit confusing. My new SIL buttered me up with a feed of dhuey in Mandurah ( after the wedding) yep he`s my favorite SIL
( ive only got one) but he has a 30 footer & likes to go out far! Yippee!

Hi Rainbow

A mulie is a pilchard. A Dhuie, well a prime example is the one that Jessie caught. They only grow in WA and ae prime eating fish. We have mulloway in WA, but call them mulloway, not jewies. Though if you go north, they have a related species which is called a black jewie. I hope I haven't confused you ther.
Good luck in Capel.

Drop me a msg when you get here. I'm in busso and I lived in capel for a couple of years before that. Still got a few mates up that way who are keen for a fish. We could tee up a mulla fish down at peppy or forrest beach one night.

I wouldn't mind that Colin Hay's money, but I don't want his sexual preferences.
Good to see someone coming to God's country. All the best, Colin Hay

Just down the road from capel. Peppy and forrest are the 2 beaches that you fish from or swim at from capel. There is mullet in the river.
I might let you in on a few more secrets too when you get over.
Capel is a top place.

I just signed the contract for a little place near the cricket nets in the sports complex. Hope theres no Matthew Haydens amongst them or we`ll need bulletproof windows!
Glad there are mullet in the river, cause I can still practice my fly fishin`. Suppose I`ll need to go to the Blackwood for trout although my BIL says Waroona is stocked with them? Anyone tried for them?

Thanks for the info on freshwater fish Lukas, just hope theyre not carp! We have 300 tonnes of the bloody things washed up dead or dying in our local Lake Colac due to receding water which is turning too salty. They are trying to clear them away, but if the wind turns around Colac will soon become a ghost town. Glad we are 20 odd Kms away!
Are there any English perch ( redfin) in WA ?
Had a meal in Albies last November & was very impressed! Never seen such an impressive salad/fruit bar ANYWHERE in the world. Dodgy looking joint on the outside but boy great meals & atmosphere! No doubt we sat next to you!
We were staying at the Geographe Bay resort, caught blue mannas( didnt want to ) & got just one KG off the jetty!

Plenty of Redfin in WA, and as a noxious pest, no bag or size limits. You'll find Reddies very close to where your living in Capel ;)

Reddies!

Sun, 2008-03-02 12:30

Thanks Moohan thats all I needed to know! Theyre OK when they can grow to a kilo but in small dams each generation just gets smaller & smaller until they are still breeding at just 6 inches!! In Scotland they are ignored for atlantic salmon, but I as a boy was catching them at 2.5 kg

Hi Big Kev,
thanks I am really looking forward to getting amongst them! Sorry but I have to say the CATS! Seen them fail twice at MCG Grand finals so it was a great win for everyone in Sth west vic. last sept.
Have a soft spot for Freeo though cause one of our locals made the team (A Siegert) a couple of years back. He worked at McDonalds before that.
