Colregs simple guide??
Submitted by Rob H on Sun, 2014-06-08 20:34
Im curious as to whether there is any interest if I put together a simple guide to the Colregs-not the full bottle but a few simple rules that may help those in busy places like Cockburn work out which is what?
I know most are (or should be) aware of a simple nav lite, but there is a method to the madness of lights that can help to understand when you should be staying clear despite seeing a green etc.

When I did my coxswain
When I did my coxswain ticket I had some wonderful flash cards that helped me learn what the different light configurations mean. It was many years ago now so basically if it has a lot of red and white lights...... I just alter course to starboard and slow down..... :)
Fish! HARD!

If the masthead (christmas tree) has more than just a white "steaming" light above the sidelights, that should be straight away a warning that he probably has the right of way whether you can see a green or not
Give me a day or 2 and I'll chuck something together.
Flash cards are great but not that practical in a little boat in the dark bobbing around. There are more simple patterns to be aware of that can help

Actually, A good port will
Actually, A good port will have a greenish tinge where the port sticks to the glass in the correct light. It is a trademark of "rancio" characteristics.

I was thinking a little
I was thinking a little further rather than the basic port starboard colours, given the number of times we have seen posts here of "commercial vessels failing to give way etc" in places like Cockburn Sound.
Skippers operating at night you'd expect to have already a basic understanding from during the day
Ive nearly completed a slightly more involved list of nav lights/actions but keeping it simple is the hard bit.

Looking forward to seeing your work Rob
Things like what you are doing make this a great site for newbies and us oldies a like. If you are not regularly on the water at night then chances are that you are not up to speed on interoperating what lights you are seeing in any sort of reasonable time, and time can be a critical factor at night.
A great idea Rob and one I'm sure will be appreciated by all who venture onto the water at night.

Small Ships manual
For those who would like a bit more info on Colregs that is required to obtain a rec skippers ticket try reading the Small Ships Manual. It covers everything you would need to get a Master Class 5 and MED2 plus more.
Not sure on the price but would expect around $35

Indian / Pakistani
Had Indian or Pakistani masters? teaching when I did my MC5 and Med2.
Remember doing the Med2 and he was talking about high speed diesels, asked what revs they were doing and he replied 750-800, Explained to him the ones we were working with idled at around 400rpm and working range of 1500-2300, after that each time there was a difficult question asked he referred it to me to answer.
