Trailer Rust Proofing Maintenance

Can anyone advise the best product to periodically coat the trailer with to seal it?  How often should this be applied and are there any "tricks"?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Yes, gets it every time - gotta love ramps that have wash down facilities that have enough water pressure to power 2 hoses for engine and general wash down after every use.  The guy I bought the boat off indicated he did the trailer with a product periodically and it was in really good condition.  Even with the fresh water you can see some surface breakdown occurring in a few spots so hence my question.  I just was seeking advice about the possible products and if any was preferred.

Totally agree with big john did the new trailer first thing with fisholene before it hit the water the springs, nuts, bolts,u bolts, winch u name it,it got a spray and after a week up north took the boat to one of the local car lovers wash blaces gave the boat and trailer a good high pressure warm wash down then the next day recoated the trailer with fisholene as john said it stinks for a bit but does a dmn good job protecting the trailer fairly cheap from Bunnings about $12 a can

the thing with denso tape is it has to be applied correctly not just wrapped on the problem with denso it is such shitty stuff to applie people give up on it and wrap things up as quickly as they can with it , we used it reliously in the marine dept at Rio Tinto

 Denso is a good product

Denso is a good product Peter when used in the right situation. We use it a lot on exposed bolts and threads offshore but I wouldn't use it on something that is under constant movement and up and down compression. You only need a tiny gap and then you have a breeding ground for rust. Lanox is the go and as I do just flush the lot with fresh water. My trailer is 8yrs old and still in good nick because I take care of it.

It's used at Dampier Salt the same way Andy is describing - on fittings etc, plus their utes' undercarriages aren't immersed in the salt water (not intentionally anyway), just spray from the haul roads etc.

it is good gear though.

An important prevention is to wash your trailer straight after launching in the morning.  Sitting in the sun all day with baked on salt while you are out fishing is where a lot of rust will start.

My missus always washes the trailer while I put up the rods etc with a beer in hand :)

+1 for denso tape as well, and ensure you manipulate it once applied to smear the grease to seal all the bindings. Shitty stuff agreed, but best for the task.

Cheers
